My daughter had her first step of a three step j-pouch 6 weeks ago. She has been having pain around her stoma recently. Mostly when she moves--she says it doesn't hurt when she is still. It even hurts to move the stoma when she changes her bag, when she is cleaning it and around it. It is quite bothersome and makes it hard to get in and out of cars, bend, stretch, etc. Is this normal and will it always be like that until they close it off? Talked to the stoma nurse and she didn't seem that concerned about it, but it would be nice if there was a real answer. She has been feeling so good otherwise, taking nothing for pain since 1 week after surgery. This pain is a lot greater than the surgical pain. She is thin and fit and there are no signs of bumps or bulges that I think of when hernia enters my mind. Anyone have any advice/input?

hi kelsie.. sorry cant' think of anything apart from hernia but it doesn't sound like that. 6 weeks is still early days though, so perhaps she's just done a little too much and strained something? I don't think it's normal and there shouldn't be any pain though, so get the stoma nurse to take a look at it and possibly the surgeon too? hopefully it will resolve and isn't serious. Good luck Sarah

I had surgery July 5th and I feel pain around my stoma also. It hurts when my shorts rub against it, when I have to clean around it for a change. I did have mesh placed to repair a hernia and I did have 4 surgeries in 2 weeks, so maybe I am not comparable, but I am wondering if this pain will subside anytime soon. let me know what her doctor says. Is there open skin around the stoma? What preps does your daughter do when she changes? When I used to have ulcers (open skin) it would hurt just to climb stairs. I have not had that problem for some time.

No, the skin is fine, it is below the skin, more in the muscle. She says it only hurts when she moves, so I think it is scar tissue or perhaps sutures that haven't dissolved??
