I took some sinus pills the other night for a sinus headache.  I woke up the next morning still yet with this terrible headache.  I took some regular pain meds (Aleve).  After going to work that morning as I went to the restroom and had to empty I noticed 2 pills in my bags. Hince the reason my head still hurt I presume.  Any way my question is this.  How do we know what will and what won't digest  before is comes out the ostomy.

I don't know.. I do tend to absorb normal pills. You could try liquid, dissolvable or those 'meltlet' things that dissolve in your mouth. Just check you get the dose right. Hope the headache goes soon

I had problems with oxycontin tablets going through my stoma as well and it turns out I can't have any pills that are coated. So I think its a safe bet to take anything thats not coated or capsules. Hope that helps

the basic rule is pills can't be "enteric" coated or timed release, slow release in whatever form as they will empty out  due to the faster transit with the ileostomy before doing its job.  When possible liquid form and sub lingual (under the tongue) will make the medicine absorb much faster and not be eliminated into the pouch.

This is what I do with all pills: I crush them with a mortar and pestle, mix with water, and drink them. So far the only pill I've taken that didn't land in the bag was a water-disolvable capsul made of plant celulose.

If you take them with food, too, it shouldn't flush right out. I do a lot of liquid things now but when I do take pills I make sure it's with enough food.

unfortunately, it's trial and error for your body:(

I take calcium and a multi-vitamin as well as two prescriptions. I never see whole pills come out. Any thought as to whether the quick transit time allows for good absorbtion?

I have had my ileostomy since May, and I am also on a lot of medications. I was told by my ostomy nurse that I needed to make sure what I was taking would not interfere with having my stoma. They said that I was to not take any extended-relief medications. Then before I left the hospital they checked to make sure all my meds were okay to take. However, I take over-the-counter Uriniary Pain Relief tabs on a regular basis and they sometimes will not digest all the way and will come thru into my pouch. I think what I notice mostly is that medications seem to wear off quicker for me, since they are going thru my system so quickly.

Best of luck to you.
