Hi Karen,

I am having the same problems.  I had my total colectomy on June 2nd, and I have still continued to suffer!  At first, things seemed to moving fine, got discharged, came back to the hospital 2 days later because I couldn't go to the bathroom, and I had a hematoma in my abdomen (they thought I had a leakage anastomasis).  I had another surgery a week later, and I was in the hospital again.  Again, things seemed to moving okay, but I got back home again and ran into problems.  I was having problems eating, passing my gas and stool, getting bloated, etc.  For the past several years, I have complained about my gas getting trapped right at my lower left abdomen, even when I eat because I can't fart right.  It seems like my bottom opens, closes, opens, closes, or bascially it is plum shut!  For now, I am taking milk of magnesia most the time, dealing with my intestines being in spasms, and as the day progresses getting more bloated with the more food and drinks I put in me.  I mean, a laxative is just a temporary fix for me, hurts me, and if I try to go by myself; I can only let out some, and it doesn't feel complete.

The only thing we know for now is that my anal muscles are weak.  However, I am having the gastric empyting test on Tuesday, soon like you.  Basically, my surgeon told me that, since I have suffered for so long I could have messed up more of my guts!  Most the time when I try to eat, I am hungry, but then it is like, okay, no; I am just going to get bloated, sick, and nausea!  Not sure if it from the built-up just from my gas, or I could have stomach problems, too!  Bottom line, you really need to have everything checked out.  Plus, you really need your small bowels checked, too!  Even though I have had my checked it seems a billion times, after the gastric empyting test, depending on the results; I will have my small bowels checked again.  Also, I think my surgeon was going to have me consult with a gi doc to check to see what he thinks; food allergies, anything else, or again, truly, just my built-up of gas.

I was going to do biofeedback, but I think since I am suffering so bad; have lost weight, etc.  If everything comes back okay, get surgery for an ileostomy, so I will not get the pressure at the bottom and built-up of gas and stool (sometimes the only way I let out my gas is through excessive burping, which makes me soooo sick; I don't know how all this gas can come from such a little person like me!); things will just move so freely, and I can eat and poop!  I was getting worried about my medical bills yesterday and was like, gosh, I don't know if I can continue with this, and still do not know how everything is going to pan out (people's guts are complicated!), but the clinic where the my surgeon works is riding off his bill for me from my original surgery date, that helps!!!  I thought that was great!  He might ride off the next one if I get my ileostomy.  The clinic is not like the hospital with charity programs.  Got to love the medical field!

I wish you the best of luck, and first it will be the gastric empyting, then after that the doc will prob. order the small bowel for you.  I hope I helped!  How did you feel when you had an ileostomy?  I am not looking at it as a bad thing, if it happens for me.  At one point in my life, I thought it would be the end of the world, but I have read so many great things on this site from people with an ileostomy!  I am looking at it as a new way of life for me, one that will truly benefit me.  It I don't look at it as a positive thing, it won't be.  I have been negative for so long!

Hi Kyle
well things sound awful for you and i truly hope you get your life back soon.  I dont know your history i'm afraid, but several years is enough suffering in my view!!!

I dont think i am that bad compared with you as dont feel nauseous a lot just full and bloated and constipated. Did you ever have an ileostomy? i did for 18 months and every medical issue was cured and no problems eating or anything.

so an ileostomy doesnt affect your life as much as having alll these issues does - the only thing i had was itching and having to keep open the bathroom window!

No, I have never had an ileostomy, so I was starting to wonder how much it would cost with supplies and everything each month.  Yeah, I do not think people understand how much I suffer.  Sometimes I go ahead, and I try to do this and that with people, but I feel so bad afterwards.  I am tired of my tummy hurting.  As for me, I have suffered with constipation ever since I was a kid.  As I got more towards my college career, I did not understand why when I was hanging out with my friends my tummy was always feeling bad afterwards.  One day, when I was finally working full-time at a job after school, one of my co-workers was like how often do you use the bathroom?  Umm, I was like, I don't know; either it would be like every couple weeks or something like, until I exploded.  As a kid, my mom said she was always trying to get me to go.  After that, I was determined to fix my gut issues, but everything I tried failed to work.  My colon just did not want to work.  It seemed I always had to resort to dulcolax.  At first, I was diagnosed with IBS, but I just felt something more was wrong.  Finally, I was starting to find out more about colon inertia.  I was taking like 5 dulcolax to have a bowel movement, and I could not stand the cramps with it; however, sometimes it did not work very well, or other times I just suffered.  I couldn't stand it.  Also, if the laxative worked, I would feel better, but not feel better.  I had this constant bloat, noise, and feeling of trapped air that could not escape from my left abdomen that started a few years ago.  Everyone could hear it!  My colon literally did not propel things out, even air!!!!

In Feb., I dealt with a local gi doc and surgeon here that performed a left hemicolectomy on me.  The sitz maker test revealed my markers were scattered throughout my colon and stopped at my splenic flexure; I had a kink; maybe why I had the trapped air?  There reasoning was we remove that part, and things will move faster.  Boy, they were wrong!  I was still taking dulcolax and upping it to 7 or 8 at times now!!  I did some research, found this website, and I called to meet with a colon-rectal surgeon!  Then, as I explained earlier, I have still been having problems.  I don't understand the pressure I get on my left side unless I am really constipated and bloated.  Even this morning, I took mom and all this pressure is on my left side, things are trying to push out, but it takes work!  Also, yesterday, just this feeling of gas trying to push out; if it doesn't, I build up, and burpiness can start if I don't watch what I eat and drink.  Other times, I just deal with it, and feel horrible, but I really can't take it anymore.  I guess since I have always complained about air and gas trying to exit, but can't, that should have been a clue with some pelvic problems.  The whole ordeal has taken a toll on me!  It is time to get my life back on track!  Currently, I am 27, and what, been dealing with this really bad for past several years; I am too young for this, so I am thinking, if my other tests pan out this week; the ileostomy will be the one and all fix for me!!!!  I am ready to live life everyday, and get a good job!!!!!!

Oh my gosh i just realised you have no colon and you take ducolax - you need to get an ileostomy asap - as you are aware you have anal problems too then there realy is no other ooption .... as for me no one has said anyting bout my rectum or annything.

Yes i understand about the pressure build up and everthing - i get that too.  lets see how the test goes this week for you and me - though i wont get the results until i see my consultant end of sept.  over in UK ileo supplies are free if you have a permanent ileo otherwise a prescription charge .. have no idea about USA.

You are too young to continue like this believe me life is too short to be miserable and in pain.x

good luck with your test Karen! as Kyle said, they do the gastric emptying then prob do the small bowel. hope all goes well for you and soon!

Kyle, i agree with Karen. if an ileostomy gives you good quality of life, go for it. no point continuing the way you are.

Karen, oh no, I took dulcolax when I had my colon, but I am not taking it now.  I am taking milk of magnesia most the time now, using suppositories, enemas.  It is still frustrating though; like I said, they don't make me feel better.  I still build of gas, I have anal problems, and nothing wants to expel right.  I burp and feel really sick and nauseous when I have so much gas and stool inside me.  Plus, I am thin, have been all my life, and all my surgeries have made me worse instead of better this year!  I am ready to move on with my life, and enjoy more things with my friends, or if I do, be in pain later!!!
