Have any of you drank a Kefir probiotic shake while having an ileostomy?  I want to try it (my husband loves it) but am wondering if the probiotics would be good or bad for me.  Curious on your thoughts.  Thanks!

I drink kefir all the time and it doesn't seem to affect my digestive system at all-- good or bad. I started drinking it again immediately after my ileostomy surgery as it is an excellent source of protein.

Its supposed to be good for the digestive system, even though we have some missing I can't see why it wouldn't be ok to have. Go for it I say

I had a bad reaction to it when I tried it in my IBD days -- I'm a bit lactose intolerant and I thought it would be OK because I was OK with yogurt then, but it wasn't...... haven't tried it since.

But if you're OK with dairy, should be fine. The bacteria that make up the probiotics that live in the small intestine will be good for you, and I would guess that the large intestine ones just flush out.

Maybe I'll try again someday....

If you are lactose intolerant then maybe water kefir would be good for you.
It is a clear rubbery thing and apparently produces lots of good bacteria too - without milk.

Personally, I cannot get enough of kefir milk - I love it.
I have found a definite anti-aging effect on my skin and I am sure it boosts my immune system.
However, I wonder what diifference an ileostomy makes to it all.

I have had zero issues with high potency probiotics without a colon... i still have a standng rx for VSL3DS and use it as I see fit afew times a week with yogurt and/or lukewarm oatmeal, and I sometimes take some other probiotics-my theory is that even though the small gut with an ostomy is not a "reservoir" like a colon or jpouch, it is still bacterially rich with a microbiome of sorts and it pays to keep pathogens at bay through some healthy competition. Zero issues with probiotics so I am sure the same with kefir.

Had ileostomy in 2009 and have been making home made kefir mixed with a bit of plain yogurt for years and find it helps digestion (and delicious mixed with a bit of banana and sultanas).
