I had J pouch surgery over a year ago and it's been a huge success. However, I am still dealing with anemia. I can't seem to get a handle on it. Does anyone have issues with anemia since having their colon removed? Is it an absorption problem? My dr. never has an answer for me. Of course when I had UC before surgery I was anemic because of the bleeding but now there is no more bleeding so it's strange that I'm still dealing with this. I take iron supplements but they are not helping. Any thoughts?

DX UC - in 2005 when I was 37
Tried every drug-even Remicade-Tried diets-nothing worked
Step 1: J-pouch surgery (Laparoscopic restorative proctocolectomy w/ temporary diverting loop ileostomy) 6-25-10
Step 2: Take down surgery (Ileostomy reversal) 10/8/10
No more UC!!! Very happy with my results of this surgery!

If you're taking it in pill form, it could be an absorption issue. When I had my ileo, I crushed my multivitamins (with iron) and mixed them in with the cream of wheat i was eating (since cream of wheat is high in iron also). That helped me, along with drinking Ensure a couple of times a day.
