Hi there, I had colon cancer, a temporary colostomy, which was reversed 12 years ago. Upon reversal and when my GI tract woke up, I found myself in the multiple bm count per day camp. Not always formed stool either, my stool can vary from formed, to all out D, to in between (messy, putty like, etc.). What did I do. Well my surgeon said - to eat anything I wanted, to take Immodium and "enjoy life". His exact words.
Worst advice I had ever been given! Here I was eating a high fiber diet and having 3 bm's during every meal. Several more in between meals.
I went online and found a colon cancer support group, someone there recommended a low residue diet for a patient going thru severe D from chemo. Her symptoms lined up exactly with mine and I wasn't on chemo (stage I, didn't need it).
To make this short, I went on a LRD and was a brand new person within 48 hours. Out went whole wheat bread, fresh fruit, high fiber, and I only ate plain, mostly white foods (white rice, cottage cheese, bananas, roast chicken, mashed potatoes, etc.). My surgeon told me later the diet was fine and actually the diet made sense to him (my insides were just raw from going so much).
I kept a food journal for 2 years as well and didn't eat anything after dinner. I only sipped water after 7 pm each night and that was so I could get a decent night's sleep w/o having to run to the bathroom.
As for pads, etc. - I still wear Stayfree Ultra Thin Maxi-pads, they are XL and go way up in the back of your underwear. Perfect for near misses and drips.
You are not alone. Far from it. I've had multiple bm's ever since my ostomy was reversed. At first I was on my way to a full blown depression until one day I just decided to make the best of this crazy situation I find myself in (it's for life). Hopefully your situation isn't for life (I'm also existing without my sigmoid and about 15 inches above that), and you'd only need to eat plain foods for a short while longer, while your GI tract heals.
Think low fiber, not high fiber, think soothing foods that can zip thru your tract, your insides are probably inflamed right now too (like mine were).
