Again, I know this is not a medical recommendation site, but I have a question and can't get a hold of my usual go-to people...lol
I ended up at e.r. today for severe abdominal pain, can not tolerate any liquids, or food with out vomiting ( I know I am dehydrated)...
This is what the e.r. did for me: gave me a contrast c.t scan, and told me I have a bulging hernia. Then discharged me with instructions to follow up with a local surgeon in 3-4 days.
They did not give me any fluids, were not concerned about pain level being high, and apparently thought it was ok that I am having these problems and did not bother to consult my surgeon ( who is at a hospital 4 hours away, which is why I did not go there to begin with)...
SOOOO.... should I be concerned about having my small intestine bulge thru my stomach after all the surgery I have had? ( In January I had a total colectomy with ileo rectal anastamosis with immediate reconnection) My thought would be yes, but how on earth would I go about contacting him on a saturday?????

Any insight on what to do?

Call the on call. Also fight for an IV for dehydration. Sounds like you are having an obstruction due to the bulge of the small intestine. I had to literally fight for many ER's to give me IV's in my recent bout with stenosed stoma. ER's are unreal. SOme docs are unreal. I was let go of an ER twice unable to eat or drink due to excruciating pain. It is like did these people go to medical school? Good luck. Rosemary

Now I am confused, I called the hospital where my surgeon is. I gave all my info to a receptionist, who paged to on call physician, and then called me back to say " No, your hernia has nothng to do with your past surgery, follow your e.r. discharge instructions".... REALLY?!?!?! That wasn't even my question!!!! So frustrated right now... Just don't know which way to go.. uuggghhh. Well, since I ahve not been able to sleep either, I may just see if I can hold down my "relax" medication and go to bed.
Thanks Rosemary! how are you feeling?

I had hernia surgery two weeks after my colectomy. I was also obstructed. That ER did not handle the situation well. When my hernia was discovered I was immediately shipped down to the Cleveland Clinic for surgery. You should be getting fluids and lots of pain meds!

Call your PCP. One ER visit where the doc DID get my situation called my PCP and told her to start advocating for me to get help, she did and it brought sooner appts, but that was the place I was dealing with where the current ileo doc had no intention of getting into revising my stoma. I still had to find my own help in NYC, but at least the PCP did place the call. She also gave me 2 IV's right in her office.

Mrs.B I am still having a lot of pain to the right of my navel at one of the lap port sites. SO FAR the new stoma is working but I have been eating very soft foods. BUT SO FAR (WRAP ON WOOD) I have been OK, so hoping all continues to go well. I just could not do another go round with all this.

Good luck. It's almost like once we do not fit the prototype of the "average" patient ER's (except for my one really nice ER doc) the rest seem to think we are just dispensible. It's like do they not think they could get sued for a death due to dehydration. One of my friend's father actually did die from dehydration from just the typical norovirus. He was all intact and had his whole gut system, he was simply old and caught the stomach flu that hung on. The ER did nothing and he succumbed. I am like WTH is with that. They just like wrote him off!!!!!!! auuuuugh!

Well, I did get a hold of the nurse from my original surgeon's office ( thank god for her!) And they got my c.t. scan and inital report ..the replacement surgeon took a look, and it does not involve the bowel to a concernable amount to him. So we are going thru with our original plan of a pelvic floor study on July 9th, and going from there. So at least that makes me feel somewhat better... my worries now are, how am i going to know if the bowel does become "too involved"?? Since I am able to drink today, and a little yesterday...i am not as concerned as i was about dehydration, but since nausea and vomiting are a clue to more problems and I already have that... how am I going to know when it does get worse?? Oh well..

has anyone else had a hernia after their surgery??? I have never had one and am EXHAUSTED... the other day I slept like 36 out of 48 hours!!
And to add to the frustration...the gastro specialist that took me off all the meds my surgeon put me on, now has decided I should go back on some :( so frustrated!!!!!!
and we go back to the hospital on Monday ( 4 hours away) so my ten year old can get ANOTHER 5mm kidney stone out! it never rains, it comes in torrential downpours :) lol...
