Can you guys eat and not have to go to the bathroom right after? As in will I be able to go to lunch for example and then go do things after or would I need a bathroom before I can go do activities?

Are you talking about months after your surgery when you are complete healed? Then yes, you should be able to control your urges and empty on your schedule comfortably. I have chronic pouchitis and I can still empty when I have time to empty, never really urgency.

The first few months after surgery some people have issues with leakages, urgency and butt burn.

If I'm lucky I have surgery 2/2 in 2 weeks (9 weeks post surgery 1). I'm preparing for hell as they say usually. Hoping for a good outcome but I heard the first few weeks can be brutal. Hope I can at least enjoy Christmas and fly home...

I am almost six weeks post-surgery. Things have gone smoothly for me so far. During the first couple of weeks my pouch would feel pretty active during mealtimes, and I would usually empty it right after eating. Since starting on psyllium husk capsules at 5 weeks (which I take an hour before meals), I am going 4-5 times a day, and sleeping through the night. At the moment, I go to the bathroom before I eat, and then don't normally need to go again until I go before my next meal, and then I empty the pouch before I go to bed.

Even if I feel there's something in my j-pouch, I have no problems in holding on for ages until it's convenient to go. There is no urgency, even when the pouch feels full. After the first few weeks, emptying my pouch became efficient: it takes a few seconds, and that's it. It's really not a big hassle.

That sounds like a dream from what it used to be. I'm hoping for a similar outcome. Thanks guys.

Pre-surgery, I had an 18 month uncontrollable flare up: so many bowel movements, totally unpredictable and with very little warning time to find a bathroom, blood loss, weight loss, side-effects from meds... Life with a j-pouch has been amazing so far. I love it and am so thankful that my surgeries went well. It has been a complete liberation.

Not everyone has those problems weeks after surgery. Others need some medications like Lomotil to slow things down and/or fiber.

To help with butt burn people use A+D diaper ointment or Calmoseptine and a bidet or squirt bottle.

Eating causes peristalisis, so for many of us, yes after eating a meal we use the bathroom. But this isn't urgency like with UC; you can comfortably hold it.

For me.....I don't have to go to the bathroom after I eat lunch but almost always soon after dinner I have to. Like Sue mentioned above, there is no urgency. You go when it's convenient for you to get to a bathroom.

I'm 9 months takedown and dealing with a little pouchitis and I'm going 4-5 times a day with no urgency. immediately after surgery I was usually in the teens with bathroom trips. My thing is, when I need to urinate I just empty my pouch in the process. I can't really urinate standing up as it seems the same muscles that control urination seem to control my pouch emptying so I just sit every time.

I am a year post take-down, and no, I don't have to go immediately. It is kind of unpredictable though, i might have to go an hour later, i may have to go 20 minutes later, I might not have to go for hours. there isn't that much logic to it. Like Byebye said, often after lunch no, but after dinner, more likely... you can always try imodium if you wanted to slow things, but I haven't tried it personally. I don't feel like toilet trips are a huge part of my day where I'd need something. I might try some before bed one of these days to see if i can avoid having a trip in the night. Like others have said, often I just go when I pee.

I had surgery in November and I was able to go to holiday parties in Dec. it was a little nerve-wracking, I was in the period of time when I was still learning, but I got through it with flying colors. Drank martinis, danced, stayed out way too late. It was a nice contrast to how a spent the prior parties - i actually didn't bother to attend because of UC and stress of an accident. It always entails a car ride too, which sucks for a UCer, but it's fine now...

I ate a bagel sandwich and some chips about an hour ago and I feel like I won't need to empty for hours. I will however empty at my convenience before I go out later regardless.
