Ok Ladies, had to start a new thread.  Gosh, 8 Parts!

Mary, I was not in the ICU at all after my surgery, thank goodness.  I don't think I would want to be in there unless I truly needed to be.  I was on a regular surgical floor my whole stay, 6 days.

As far as the NG tube goes, my surgeon said that he didn't routinely place them for surgery, but there is always the possibility of needing one afterwards.  I started having lots of nausea and vomiting in spite of all of the antiemetics I was receiving a day or 2 after surgery, once I was starting to be more alert.  As you probably read, they attempted NG tube placement several times, but I couldn't handle it.  I ended up being just fine and got over the nausea/vomiting about day 5.

Mary- each doctor does things different. Unfortunately, you're at the mercy of your doctor. If he prefers you in ICU, the care is definately more attentive there. In the hospital I was in, I could have died on the surgical floor and it would have taken a long time for anyone to notice. I had much better care when I was moved into ICU, 2pts to 1RN, and intensivists (doctors) right there on the unit.

I personally hated the NG tube. In my time of mental confusion, I was sure they were trying to kill me with the NG tube. I pulled a number of them out only to have to get them put back in. I even went home on a feeding tube and gagged constantly. I finally made my husband pull it out, I couldn't stand it any more. I can't think of any one who would want one of those nasty things one second longer than necesary.

Don't worry so much about the little things. Keep positive thoughts that all is going to go well.

I am back from surgery. The surgery went well. They removed about 5 1/2 feet of my colon. I was in a lot of pain for the first three days. I started drinking a little fluids around the third day. I developed an illieous, and oh my goodness did I throw up. I never knew you could throw up that much. Then the bad news came on the fourth day that my small intestines had gone to sleep. The doctor said we just have to wait until it decides to wake up and work again. they kept taking x-rays to see if my ileious was working yet. I is just now starting to work again after 9 days post opp. I have litterly thrown up more than I could ever care to throw up. On Saturday last weekend I had two nurses try to put the NG tube in,but no such luck my reflux wouldn't take it. Then on Sunday morning since I was still throwing up, two more nurses tried to with lots of drugs to keep my mind off the refux pt of it. No such luck there either. Finally I was praying for someone to put that darn tube in, just so I wouldn't have to tastes my insides again. That is the worst part so far from the surgery. I have a bag that looks like milk attatched to me to give me the nutients I need to get better. The doctor still won't say when I can go home, all he says is one more day. I still have the NG tube and he said hopefully tomorrow I can have it removed. Then I will have to start drinking and eating. So hopefully by next Tuesday, or before I can go home...

Lesa, hopefully you are home and getting back into a rutine. I am so glad everything went as well for you.
Helensc I know your turn has come and I pray only you aren't afraid.  I pray for your peacefull durning this time. Please let us know how you are doing.

I will continue to update as to when I am released from this place.

Blessings to you all,

Hey I am so ready to have this ng tube removed but I can't yet. Has anyone heard anything from Helen?
I hope her surgery goes as well as mine and Lesa's went.
I am so ready to go home boo hoo hoo. I have been here for 10 days now. I am ready to sleep in my own bed,and see my own things. The nurses I have had, have been wonderful. Except for the weekend nurses.
Thanks everyone for cheering me on. I will be checking back in a while.

Blessings,
Sasha

Glad to hear from you Sasha!  Hope you get out of the hospital soon!  Those NG tubes are awful!  At least they help w/ the nausea and vomiting, that was the worst part for me also.
