Hi everyone - fairly new to the site - operated on 15 Feb and now have a sigmoid stoma and a ileostomy, they will create a j pouch and join me back up at the end of June.  Sounds quite different to the procedure most of you have had.

With the UC I lost a lot of weight, put some on with medication and then lost it again around the op time.  Since the operation and having the bag I have put on around 20 pounds.  I am not over worried because I am just back to where I was but don't want to gain any more. Is it normal to put on weight with the bag?  Second question:  is it normal for my abdomen to bulge out where the stomas are? I feel like I have 2 volcanos on my stomach - even my 'fat' wardrobe is becoming uncomfortable now I have this extra layer, plus the bags.  I can live with it until June (when I will probably lose some pounds again) but would like to know if it's just me.  What is your experience with weight loss/gain?  Thanks a lot, g

Yes, it is normal to put on weight after surgery.  Remember, you had UC which was robbing you of nutrient absorption not to mention playing havoc with your GI tract.  Now that you are "healthy" your body is absorbing calories normally.  I found that 5 years post j-pouch surgery I had gained 34lbs!  I have since shed 24lbs of it.

I don't quite understand your stomach bulge but can tell you from my experience it took about a year for my abdomen to look normal again.  There was lots of distortion due to the incisions but it eventually went away.

Thanks Sue - the surgeon did tell me to try not to put on many pounds before the reconstruction so I will try to lose a bit before the end of June to be in as good shape as possible for the reversal. I am already feeling much better just for no longer being anaemic and being off all th strong medication. Thanks again
