My husband is scheduled to have a colectomy in June due to having UC for 33 years.  The doctor at the Cleveland Clinic isn't planning on removing his rectum with this surgery.  My husband is concerned that by not doing this he may experience a return of his UC in his rectum and have to have it removed at a later date.  Has anyone had experience with this either way?

A lot of people with UC have their rectum left in and never have any problems (just need regular checks to make sure everything is ok back there). On the other hand, some people (like me) end up having to have their rectum removed a year later.

If your hubby is going to have a j pouch, then they will leave the rectum intact or possibly just scrape out the rectal lining.

Good luck.

I have had an ileostomy for 31 years now due to UC.

I cannot imagine that a CC surgeon would not remove a rectum in a patient with UC unless your husband is having his surgery in 3 steps.  A regular 1 or 2 step surgery would remove the rectum.  A UC patient having a colectomy with a rectum left intact will continue to have UC.  Could you maybe have misunderstood?  All UC patients will have a rectal cuff left (about 1-2 CM of rectal tissue) but the majority of the organ is removed.
