I had planned a holiday abroad, the first one since i had the cystoplasty(which is bowel transplanted into my bladder to enlarge the capacity)..
My specialist wished me good luck, but mentioned that as there were staples in my bladder, this may trigger off the alarm,so he gave me a letter to produce to the airport staff IF the alarm went off..
well surprise surprise it did,and all eyes were on me,one of the staff beckoned me over which i duly did,and i started the explanation of the operation and the staples, then rooted in my handbag for the letter, she looked at me bemused, and asked me once again to go through the scanner and again it went off..then she started to smile and said"oh it's okay it's the metal on your shoes"..so there i had to get on to the plane with the rest of the passengers knowing full well that most had heard what had gone on eyes ..I will add though that when i flew home again,i DID remove my shoes :-) ..
I have recently had a ileostomy, and in the past i have had my left kidney removed due to reflux from my urator, although it was re-implanted numerous times,it lead to continual infection.
I have also had a cystoplasty(using bowel)and at the moment this is causing problems due to the mucus..I am having treatment for bladder washouts

LOL, poor you.

When I went on holiday to Menorca I was expecting to be stopped and asked about my ostomy. I was quite worried about that as it was only 6 months since surgery. Well I went through fine but they stopped my Husband and searched his travel bag. They said there was a metal thing in there that they coudn't identify. Well they went through it and didnt find anything unusual(of course we Knew they wouldnt)but all the time I was worrying that they would then want to check out the suitcases and might get out my ostomy supplies for all the world to see. I had shared the clothes and my supplies between both our cases just incase one got lost. They didnt check them thankgoodness.

When I was travelling from the USA to the UK (I'm an Aussie) they took me aside and searched my case. They came across my ostomy supplies and didn't bat an eyelid :) We're not the only ostomates who travel and I guess they've come across this sort of stuff many times before.
I have had an ileostomy for 31 years now due to UC.
