I have had my ileostomy for about 3 months now. I notice a strange pattern with my bowel movements. I usually go to bed around 11pm and usually around 12:30am my stool becomes watery. In fact, it's just pure water. No thickness to it at all. I get up 4 or 5 times a night to empty my bag. Sometimes there is a little food and foam floating on top of the liquid. There has only been about 3 or 4 nights that this has not happened.

I usually get up around 8am and I will continue to have pure watery stool for another hour or so. But things start to thicken up pretty quickly. This is even before I have eaten breakfast because I hardly ever eat first thing in the morning. As the day goes on my stool becomes an applesauce or thick pudding consistency. Every now and then some watery stool will sneak in there though.

But once it gets late all of a sudden things change and the water consistency comes back. And once again I'm up all night. This happens no matter what I do or what I eat. I don't even eat before I go bed! I don't eat anything after 8pm. So by the time I'm in bed it's been 3 hours since I have had anything.

I have prescription medicine that I take. One is for watery stool and the other is supposed to help slow down your system. I make sure I take my last doses before I go to bed.

It's just so weird. Is this normal?

MIne is always really watery in the morning and I have to change it a few times once I get up, but after I eat it thickens a little.  If it is too thin I put those gel tabs in it.  Although the watery stuff is easier to get out of the bag I think.  But it is annoying cause you have to change that more often.

It's probably because as you said ' I don't even eat before I go bed! I don't eat anything after 8pm. So by the time I'm in bed it's been 3 hours since I have had anything' therefore your tummy doesn't have anything in it to digest so it's just watery output. During the day when you're eating substantial meals so your tummy DOES have something to digest and output, you'll have thicker output.
I have had an ileostomy for 31 years now due to UC.

yupyup, i agree with that.  i used to eat before bedtime to avoid the liquid, problem is that that extra little meal isn't exactly calorie free lol, so i stopped doing it.  consistancy is different all the time anyway, i don't worrry about it anymore, whatever comes out, comes out.

4 or 5 times a night i think is pretty excessive though!  how much are you actually emptying?  i usually have a 1/2-full bag every 3 hrs when asleep...so that means i get up once to empty.  and these are minibags

I hadn't thought that the reason it's watery at night is because I haven't eaten. That does make alot of sense. The funny thing is that I'm usually pretty hungry by the time I go to bed. But even before I got my ileostomy I never ate after a certain time. No matter how hungry I was. Now it's a habit.

But the watery stool was concerning me because the bag is almost half full everytime I empty at night. One positive is that since, it's liquid the bag stays clean at night. But since it fills up while I'm sleeping I'm surprised I have never had leakage.
