I am a 26yr old young lady with UC. I had my large bowl removed when I was 19 due to extreme uc. It was a emergency surgery and the outcome was not postive. But I made it and now seven years later my GI and the surgeons believe that I should have my rectum removed due to the increased risk of cancer. I am frightend and don't really know much about the surgery. I am looking for a new sugeon because the one I have been seeing in very insensitive and does'nt give me any reasurrance. I want to move on with my life and get this over and done with. Has anyone been through rectal surgery, I would like to hear your stories.

i had it when i had my colon taken out, To me, it was the hardest part of the surgery to wrap my head around. It was just weird to me to have my butthole removed, lol. But it wasn't too bad. It hurt a little, mainly it itched for a while. about three weeks, i found ways to deal with it to make it more bearable, like sitting on soft things, not sitting in one position too long, It's a lot easier than the stomach surgery. Everyonce and awhile i think, wow it's weird to not have a butthole anymore, but just sort of in passing. you don't need it for anything anymore, and with UC there is an increased risk of cancer, and it would be alot better to have it out now, than to have to have it out because of cancer.

You will probably be offered a j-pouch as a replacement for your rectum, a very good and liveable solution. I had j-pouch surgery 6 years ago for UC and I have never regretted it. You should visit www.j-pouch.org There are others on that discussion board who had a colectomy and then years later had to go back and have the rectum removed. They can share their experience with you.

Lorann,
Please don't be scared. You've already been through the worst of it. I had my colon and rectum removed at the same time, so I didn't notice any pain from the rectum being removed. Mine was so diseased that it used to hurt all the time, so I actually felt better once it was gone.

While it was healing, I had to pack it with saline-filled gauze twice a day, which wasn't a big deal. I went back to work after surgery and was able to sit at my desk all day without any pain. I'm glad that I had it removed, because now I don't have to worry about being sick anymore or getting colon or rectal cancer.

Good luck!
