Met with the surgeon today and am having several of the tests scheduled over the next few weeks. The doctor said from what he sees from my medical information that I look like a good candidate to have the colon removed and attach the small intestines to the rectum.

I have never had any type of surgery much less a major one like this. I was just wondering what to expect. Will I be able to take care of myself once I'm released from the hospital? I know I'm not going to be cleaning the house. Will I be very uncomfortable? Did they send you home with pain meds?

The doc said I won't need a temporary bag so I won't have to deal with that.

Gotten alot of good info from this forum. It's been great!

I had my TC on 8/9/07. I recovered great. I had someone with me at the hospital at all times. I couldn't imagine not having someone there. Everytime I had to get up to use the restroom I had to unplug the IV pole and take it with me. I also needed help with showering. I stayed 6 days in the hospital and then at home I had 24hr help. Its been a couple weeks and I still have help around the house. and yes they do send you home with pain meds. they keep you pretty drugged up while in the hospital also.

i had sugery four months ago, had my colon removed and a perm bag. It's not fun in the hospital, lol, but they keep you drugged so you won't feel bad from that. I don't know what you have that is making you do this, but I had UC and honestly when i woke up i felt better in some ways than i had in 8 years. I had to stay in the hospital for 6 days, and my husband stayed the first two nights, but most of the time i alone, which wasn't fun. But anyway, they did send me home with pain meds, but honestly the pain really wasn't that bad by then. The first couple of days, i was pretty useless, but they allowed me to eat pretty much whatever, just certain things to stay away fron. Anyway, after that i did pretty good for a while, i took care of myself. My parents came up every little while and checked on me, and my grandma and my aunt were over alot too. It helped to have company. THe worst part for me, was that my son had to stay with my grandma for 6 weeks, becuase you can't lift at first. Anyway, i was doing pretty good for a week or so and then dumb old me decieed to eat some pizza, BIG mistake! that set me back a few days, horrible pains, no sleep, not eating, and because of that i got dehydrated, which you really have to watch and ended up having ot go to ER and get some fulids, and after that i was pretty good. by about a month after i was doing a fair amount of stuff, still tiring easier, but i am good now, doing everything, and more now. Most likely you will get a home healthcare nurse that will come to see you once a day. You will be able to take care of yourself, but you will feel better if someone is there, and it is alot safer, especeially when you are on pain meds.
Good luck!

I had surgery on Wednesday morning, was sent home Saturday afternoon, and was mopping my floors on Sunday morning. I clean, walk, drive, and shop. The only thing I do not do is lift! Sure I am sore but life goes on and I have a life to live. I do not have time to lay in bed all day and watch the dust pile up, the dishes sit in the sink and the laundry accumulate to the ceiling....Like most women I have lots of things to do....I am a wife, mother, homeschooler, fitness instructor, realtor and I have a church calling. Each of these titles require lots and lots of responsbilities that must get done.

You will be great after your surgery! Just stay positive and work on staying strong! You will be back to yourself sooner than you think.

Good Luck with your surgery!

Thanks so much for the replies. Those are very helpful and encouraging :)

I just have my husband and I don't want to wear him out. He has his own business so he has to keep that going. I'll definitely ask about a Home Health nurse. I was also thinking of asking my GF about using her cleaning lady. That would be a big relief to have the house clean.

Wow Amey! You're making me tired just reading your post!! LOL!! Glad you're doing so well.

I go next week for Anorectal Manometry, Electromyography, Pudendal Nerve Terminal Motor Latency and Anal Ultrasound ! Then the next day I get defecography/defogram, then the following week I do the marker study.

I'm ready now to have it taken out so I'm sure I'll really be ready once I go thru all those tests.

Thanks again for all your help and advice.

Good Luck on all of your tests coming up - keep us posted. Just remember that everyone heals at their own rate, and you will know what you can or cannot do. Don't overdo it, but keep moving cause it does help in the healing process. You muscles take every opportunity they can to be lazy and moving wakes them back up. It will hurt - all surgeries do, but just keep in mind where you are going is so much better than where you have been!

If you wouldn't mind, could you keep me updated with all your tests results, especially the anorectal manometry, the defocagraphy, and the Sitz Marker.  When you go to have your Sitz Marker done, ask to see the x-ray everytime you go in.  I am curious to see what yours looks like compared to mine.
I have never had an electomyography or the prudenal nerve study, what are these?

Thanks Peggy :) I exercise but I've not been eating enough for cardo and I've lost alot of weight anyway so I don't need the cardo in that respect, but I don't want to get too out of shape. I have been trying to keep up with my weight bearing exercises so I don't lose my muscle mass. I was thinking that I would asking the doctor what he thought about me walking on the tread mill and exactly when I could start doing that. He said I couldn't do my regular exercise for 6 weeks.

M2S, I'll keep you posted. I start the first tests next week and then the marker test the second week of Sept. Thanks for letting me know I should ask to see my xrays. I have MS so the whole reason I'm having these problems is b/c it's damaged my nerves that regulate my colon. So that's why he's ordered the nerve testing studies.

Thanks again for all the input.

Just wanted to let you know all my tests have gone really well so far. The nurse said I was in the good range with my pelvic floor muscle tests so that means I can have my small intestines hooked up to my rectum.

I start the sitz marker study tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes. I go in for my xrays tomorrow, wed and friday.

I'm gonna be really hurting by Friday b/c it'll be over a week since I've gone to the bathroom using a laxative to clean me out. I'm going to be so backed up it's going to hurt once I can take a laxative. Not looking forward to that. Wish I didn't have to go this long.
