Hi Friends,

I'm 44, female, had a total colectomy, ileostomy x1yr, J-pouch, reconnect with only small intestine remaining all due to Ulcerative Colitus.  Final surgery was in Jan 98.  I did really well for first 7 yrs.  Used Immodium, Metamucil & watched my diet to slow the stools and bulk them up as much as my body would allow.  Unfortunately also have a lot of scar tissue on the inside and causes a lot of pain especially when gassy and bouts of uncontrollable diarrhea.

Lots of life issues have caused tremendous stress in past few years including husbands deployments, daughters rape, moms death...most recently husband asked for divorce after 23 yrs of marriage.  Needless to say, whats left of my small intestine is in an uproar.  Constant diarrhea, gas, pain.  In past 2 months have gone from 142lbs to 113 (weighed yesterday at doctors office).  Love my gastro dr. but she seems to be at a loss as well.  Blood work looks good, sig scope looked "great".  What really scares me is that these were all tests and results I received over the years before they ended up having to remove my colon.  Your body builds up a tolerance to immodium over the years so I was up to 30 a day. My Dr. was obviously asstounded and asked me to cut back.  Since doing so (15 day/5 3xs day) - I'm living in the bathroom, afraid to eat because it just runs through me.  Painful, even my legs have started cramping.  Any suggestions/help would be much appreciated.
I'm scared!

I suggest you visit www.j-pouch.org That site has over 6000 j-pouch members who can better advise you. This site has only a couple of j-pouchers.

Thank you Sue - how can I also post my problem on "total colectomys" site 16. They might be able to help but I'm new to this and a bit confused.

I woudn't bother with posting there. Most of those people had surgery due to colonic inertia, not UC. Their problems where chronic constipation and their needs and results are different from ours. I would go straight to the jpouch board where 99% of the posters had surgery due to UC.

Jinxie,

I just read your post for the first time and wanted to tell you how sorry I am that all of this is happening to you. You have way too much emotional stuff going on, and we all know that stress aggravates our GI problems.

With the diarrhea, weight loss, and leg cramps that you been having, it sounds like your electrolytes are out of balance. Make sure to drink Gatorade and eat bananas and potatoes for potassium. You might want to talk to your doctor about being admitted to the hospital for some IV fluids and further testing.

Can your GI prescribe Lomotil for the diarrhea? Please keep us posted on how you're doing.

Take care,
Cecilia

Hi Cecilia,

Thank you for your advise. No, I haven't tried Lomotil yet. Does it make you tired/sleepy? I'm always afraid to try new meds. I really need to function now and am afraid that if I end up in the hospital again my soon-to-be-ex will try to get custody of my son.

I've been drinking a ton of gatorade & water and have another appt with my GI next week. I've also taken suebears advise and joined the j-pouch.com group. They've been extremely helpful and full of advise as well. I'm researching the many things I'm learning so I can talk to my doctor about what might be best for me to try. Also still waiting on the latest blood results. In the mean time I'm taking it a day at a time and doing a lot of praying. The last time I felt this bad was 10 yrs ago when they finally had to do the colectomy.

Thanks again - I'll keep in touch
