Hello, today is 113007 and on 082307 I had an ileostomy reversal.  On 050107, I had a rectal resection to take out a mass in my rectum.  It was cancerous, but they were able to get all the cancer.  An ileostomy was put in and after the doctor was sure my colon and rectum was open enough without too much scarring to obstruct the passage of my bowels, I was scheduled for the takedown.  Since then, I have been careful of what I eat.  My bowel movements are becoming more regular, but I still have problems with my rectum thinking it has to be empty.  Totally empty.  Once I have gone to the bathroom enough to clean myself out, I continue to strain.  Sometimes, I have mucus and a small amount of bm but the feeling still persists.  It is not as bad as it once was, but it is still there.  My question is.  Will this stop.  Has anyone experienced this after a takedown.  It is hard to talk to people about this.  Believe me, no one wants to hear about it.

Yes, this should get better with time. Give yourself a full year for adaptation. A great place to go for support is Over 6000 members on that site who have had either a j-pouch, permanent ostomy or k-pouch. We do understand and we know that no one else likes to hear about these problems!

I do not have any suggestions for you. I just wanted to let you know that I read your post and I hope you find some answers to help you. This problem has be very uncomforable. I can recall this feeling "of needing to empty" when I suffered from chronic constipation.

Have you tried increasing your fiber in your diet to make your stools more loose...just a thought?
