My father was just diagnosed.  I just want to know the truth.  Is it possible to die from this?

Hi Meg
I've never heard of anyone dying form PD directly - it's usually the complications that are the problem. In my Dad's case it was a chest infection - he had a number of these when his swallow reflex was affected and food kept getting into his lungs. I will add that he kept pulling out drips, so we had to persevere with feeding by mouth - medical staff were superb, but we couldn't avoid the problems.

Others may know differently. Keep positive, my Dad survived for 25+ years following dx. He participated in a drugs trial in UK that probably extended his life span by some 8-10 years as it helped to slow progression, so make sure your Dad has the best medical support.

Keep in touch and remember that you are in our prayers

Love and hugs

In general pd is not a fatal disease. With the modern medications available, symptoms can be controlled, and a fuller longer life with pd realized.Having said that no 2 individuals are the same with this disease, and symptoms differ greatly amoung individuals.Wishing you and your dad the best, and continue to use all resources available to you relative to pd.The more you know the better able to control this disease.

Thank you so much for the responses - even if I haven't replied for 4 years!  Just getting back to this site.  My Dad is progressing, but seems to be ok.  Thanks for all your thoughtfulness.  I am thinking of you all as well.

Deaths are usually attributed to swallowing problems or complications from it such as pneumonia. Be careful when eating-always!
