I am 15 monts post robotic prostatectomy.  It wasn't until my 11th month post surgery that I was able to obtain an erection firm enough to penetrate with the help of viagra.  I do find that the viagra works ONLY when my stomach is completely empty.  Obviously, this requires planning ahead.  I was wondering if others find this to be true with viagra, as well as the other oral medications.

Yes, Viagra's directions are to take it on an empty stomach. Food does interferes. Levitra takes longer to kick in but it will tollerate food.

For those that use Viagra, how empty is empty? How long do you wait after eating before taking it? I know a fatty meal is bad for Viagra...

I have found my stomach really needs to be empty with viagra.  The length of time I need to wait depends on how large a meal I ate.  Typically I need 3 1/2 to 4 hours without eating anything to have any hope that viagra will work.  While I consider myself fortunate that things can work at all (sometimes), the empty stomach thing certainly makes things less than spontaneous.

I am getting no results from Viagra, however I do have some info on the empty stomach issue.  If I take my Viagra on a 3-4 hrs empty stomach, I get the chest and face flush (rash), with the warm feeling in the face , heartburn and increased sensitivity on feeling my heartbeat.  If I take the same on a stomach with any food in it, then the response is varied in intensity according to how much food I have eaten.  I ate a good sized snack last night followed by 50mg of Viagra and felt none of the effects that I get on an empty stomach.  All people being different, for me food on the stomach does make a big difference in the way I feel when taking it.  Whether this affects the ability to get an erection I can't answer, as I am not to that point yet.

a month out of surgery, when I was comparing cialis and viagra I tried generic viagra. It worked insofar as getting me a quick erection, but I started seeing fuzzy neon blue lines on my tv that weren't actually there so never tried it again. I don't think that has anything to do with it being generic.

I have found that none of the ED Drugs will work very well with french fries or ribeye steaks or hamburgers. Shrimp are out, too. No heavy salad dressings. No butter.

Chicken and rice seem to be fine...

I have been told that if you wait until 2 hours after you eat and take Viagra no more than 1 hour before sex it will work best. Also if you do not have an hour to wait, chewing up the pill before you swallow will speed up the absorption into your system by 30 minutes. Even though Viagra claims to last 4 hours (not the erection) it is at its peak strength in the 1 to 1 1/2 hour time frame after taking them.

^ same here, my wife is not into pre-planning so I often end up chewing up 1/2 a blue pill (yech!!!!) and letting it soak into my mouth tissues a bit before washing it down with water. Ready to go in no time.

I've had results from viagra. It was recommended I start with half a pill. I did the first time on an empty stomach and was pleased. The next time was not on an empty stomach and results were positive, but not good enough to seal the deal. I've used viagra at the full dose too, with much better results, but the empty stomach seems to be the key. I don't care about the flush or the temporary blue haze.

I've taken two cialis, one on a Friday and the next a week later on a Saturday, and sadly fell asleep on the couch watching a movie with the wife both times. So to say it's been a failure would be untrue, but the jury is out on it.

Hopefully these things are merely for rehab and will not be required for the long haul. A stiff wind is all it used to take. But I'm only 3 months out of surgery so I'll be patient.
