sorry to be the one who seems to ask really gross questions, but I'm getting a bit concerned over a recent development. It has been exactly two weeks since cath came out and just over three weeks since Robotic Surgery.

I have been doing really well, I think. Dry at night, 2-3 pads a day is all. But for the last 3 or 4 nights, between 10:00 and 11:00 I pass enormous clots of blood and have very bloody urine. These are big clots over an inch long. I drink lots of water and by 2:00 AM my urine is clear again. This has been going on until last night when I was passing large clots and bloody urine until 5:00 AM.  I stayed home today and took it really easy.

So, I called the doc today since, according to the paper they gave me, little clots are ok, but to call if they are big. Well, the nurse asked if i was still able to pee and was not getting blocked up. I assured her I was still passing a large volume of urine, but just bright red and bloody. I had to conduct a concert yesterday, but no straining, pushing or anything.  The nurse told me bloody urine was to be expected for 6-8 weeks. She was going to ask the doc, but I've heard nothing back. I really don't want a new catheter. Has anyone else experienced this?

Sorry to be gross, but it is alarming to see this stuff come out of you...not to mention feels really weird.

Grossly yours

Paul

Can't help with that one Paul I don't recall anything like that happeneing to me. If the nurse gives you the run around, I'd insist on talking to the Dr. Has anyone else had something like that? As I remember after a few days there wasn't any blood at all. I don't mean to worry you Paul and I'm sure its nothing serious but I think you should have that checked.
Your friend,
Pete
PS: it was great talking to you yesterday and I'm going to hold you to that drink in Stuart when you come down to sunny Fla!

Hi Paul:  The same thing happened to me at four weeks after surgery -- but for only one day.  At the time, no one here in this forum had heard of it either.

I'd had the occasional dark blood and tiny scabs in my urine for two weeks after surgery, then no bleeding at all for two weeks.  Then at week four, one day after lunch, I noticed some very bright red blood in my urine and as the day went into evening, my urine was running like Cherry Kool-Aid.

I called City of Hope and the triage nurse said it was "Somewhat unusual, but not uncommon."  She told me I had probably “overdone something” physically and that I should take it easy; drink lots of water and keep them informed.  She also told me to go to my local ER if I found myself unable to urinate.  (In the meantime, she contacted my surgeon.)

about a half hour later, I had the urge to urinate again and when I tried to go, I felt clogged for a second-or-so, which scared the hell out of me.  As I stood and waited, clots like you're describing began to shoot out of me -- about six of them --  some with such force that they missed the bowl, hitting the wall, floor etc.  The largest was about the diameter of a dime.

Right after that, I had clear urine, which has been clear ever since.  I was on the phone twice that night with my surgeon and he said he was a little concerned about this happening at four weeks.  He was glad to hear I was running clear urine, but hooked me up with a urologist on call here in Vegas, in case I needed to go to an ER that night.

Anyway, to reiterate, after my clots came out, my urine ran clear and has ever since.  But If you've been passing clots for three days I say see your doc as soon as possible.  You probably just need an adjustment in the meds you may be taking or need to curtail your level of physical activity in some way.

Hang in there bro,

Tom

They are mildly concerned. They think I may have overdone it and this is the body complaining. As long as I am drinking a lot and able to pass urine, they want to wait. if it is not getting better by the end of this week, I have to go in for a catheter...NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! So I am lying around. It's weird, cause some times, I pee clear, then 30 mins later it's full of clots and blood. Sigh.. Peeing in technicolor does add to the thrill though.
Yuckily yours.

Sorry to hear of your troubles. A few years ago before this cancer thing, I was walking two brisk miles a day. One day at the end of the walk, blood just like you described. After it happened a few times I noted that it happened on days that I took aspirin or alieve. I could take asprin and not walk or I could walk and not take asprin.

May not help.

Lucky guy, on directing concerts. tell us about it when you get a chance.

Hi Paul

Please don't apologize for any PCa subject matter that you write about it! The sky seems to be the limit in this forum--our members are "cool" and have probably covered every conceivable aspect of what has happened to them post-treatment. You are furnishing vitial information which may well be helpful to members and non-members now or later. Once you get PCa, shyness disappears! Good luck to you!

Well, Tuesday was bad. Gargantuan clots spurting everywhere culminating in one scene out of a horror movie with probably 20 clots in one event at 8:00 pm (Picture a machine gun). I was going to call the doc again, when I was distracted. One of my students came to my door and i had to take care of him. I had time to drink another class of water. I had to go again. Hmmmm did it seem not quite so bad this time? I drank some more and by 11:00 was peeing simply pink urine. By 1:00 Am today, I was having normal urine.

Today has been pretty good...pink a few times but no clots.

Sooo...what was the lesson here? I think I was probably doing a HAIR too much for a couple days - teaching just two classes a day. that resulted in night time blood and clots. I think I would have been fine if I had had the weekend to rest. But holding auditions in NYC on Saturday and conducting a concert on Sunday was simply too much for my body. While i didn't do any one thing (like lift heavy weights) i simply did too much. These stories of guys who play golf a week after robotic surgery are marketing scams, I think.

So, guys who have yet to go under the knife. take at least 3-4 weeks off before doing ANYTHING. As my nurse said, If i wasn't going to stop and lie down, I would be getting a catheter installed...with no anesthesia. Noooooooo!

I remember reading a posting where the guy said that he went out running (with the catheter) the day that he was released from the hospital so I guess that anything is possible.  I haven't seen anyone else describe the kind of bleeding that you are having.  My surgery was 10/4/2007 and I had a few small clots, but not many although the last one was probably several weeks after the surgery.  Small scabs were also observed including three small ones at once and that was recently.  As non-doctors all that we can say is that this is not common and I would be in the doctor's office until he saw me. PS-my surgery was not robotic either because we had some problems also when the surgeon began the procedure.

Hi Paul,

I had clots as well, about 14 days following surgery.  Not as many as you have had in one event, but enough to be concerning.  I called the doctor's office two or three times over two week period.  The nurses and doctor in the office weren't concerned and said clotting was normal.  Drinking more water seemed helpful, but I found that drinking Cranberry juice made things better as well... coincidence or not :-)

I think my overdoing it physically had something to do with the frequency and amount of the clots.

Anyway... the clots were gone after three weeks.

There is a lot of repair done to our bodies during surgery and I think we just need to take it easy and let things heal correctly sometimes.

Let us know how you're doing.

All the best,

Barry
