I awakened twice one year ago today.  The first time I had my prostate.  The second time I didn't.  Today, one year later, I go drip, drip, drip all the day long.  I tried kegaling, tried, bio-feedback, tried everything else.  Did my surgeon mis-handle my sphincter?  He may have because another uro wrote in his notes after a cysto, "sphincter seems a little shorter than normal".  Dr. Walse says if a surgeon is not careful, than can happen.  Does my diabetes affect?  Perhaps, maybe even probably.

I am now awaiting a visit with my present uro to see how quickly I can have something done surgically (preferably the male sling...kw you are in my prayers, especially on the 22nd).

Gene-  I'm wishing you the best. A year is a long time to deal with that. I've dealt with it for 8 months and will be getting an artificial sphincter in mid-April. Six weeks after that the device will be activated, and I will then be dry.  The sling is the natural way to get it done, but that is for somewhat mild cases, and that's not me.  Glad you can go in that direction.

I know I may be more than mild in my incontinance.  But due to my age (44) I wanted to try the sling first.  If I do not get the relief I want or can live with I will go back for the AUS after a while.

    Good Luck to you guys!

Cowboy (& anyone else who might knlw for sure),

What is your surgeon/uro saying about the process of the artificial sphincter?  How long does he expect you to be in the hospital?  Is it considered major surgery or just a "procedure"?  How did you go about feeling confident that he can handle the surgery?  How many of these things are performed each year nation-wide (I know that may be too much to find out).

My search has not answered very many questions about the sphincter surgery.  I am most likely in the same category as kw, mabe even a little worse, except I am older.  The post about the mal-function of the artificial sphincter in Jerryv has of course concerned me.  The sling seems much less invasive and simple, which is why I am considering it, although I know there are risks there too.

Thanks, Gene

Hi Gene

I know what you are going thru because i have been there.  It is very easy to get discouraged but that word you better remove from you vocabulary.  Discouragement only makes you feel worse but also those many oeople that love you.. I had the AUS installed on September 10 2007 and at that time i also was circumsised.  I guess that was a bit to much and very painful.  about the middle of December the pump in the Sphincter broke and absessed and it was taken out.  On February 4,2008 i had a new AUS put in and i know that will work.  I have very little pain and i am looking forward to having it activated on March 11.  I am sure it will take a little while to get used to it but i am loooking forward to having it work.  I will keep you posted as to my progress.
