Kristen,
Your friend has given you a fine response. That is very strong advice and Faith. In addition to all the medicine there is always Faith, Love and Hope. I have one for you that a friend recently told me he saw on a little girls shirt:

"Don't pray to God to make your life easier. Pray for Him to make you stronger."

God does know what we can handle, and precisely how to make us handle it well.

Hi Kristen,

Sorry I mistook you for a young man in an eariler post.  nono shame on me!

As you can see, there are many other wonderful women in this forum working for the health of the special men in their lives.

Your doctor is likely recommending surgery since your Dad is relatively young.  For many doctors, surgery is still the "gold" standard for patients under 60.  For me, at 54, I wanted to take a chance to remove all the cancer in a single operation.  I had the da Vinci surgery last July with a Gleason of 3+3.  The surgery was much easier than the hernia surgery I had ten years ago.

Their are side-effects to all treatments, but the overall quality of life can improve significantly as the patient works through the treatment pattern as directed by competent.  And... the operative word is "patient."  Those that have been blessed with good surgical or radiation outcomes and are patient with themselves, seem to do the best, w/o damage to their bodies.

Hang in there!  You're asking about all the right stuff!

Regards,

Barry

Hi Kristen,

In my circumstances, the Gleason score was about the same as your Dad's with a lower PSA. Given that the prostate was small, and the cancer was contained to the 'capsule'...no lumps or bumps or nothing outside of it, both my urologist and my oncologist found me to be a perfect candidate for the radioactive seeds (iodine 125). Though I have heard talk of side-effects kicking in 2 or 3 years down the road, that really doesn't make sense as the radioactivity is gone in 12 months. So far there are so few side effects going on for me that I feel guilty.

As to the pads...that is a dignity issue. Trust me, as this process goes on, you learn to leave your concept of dignity behind when you leave the house...cuz it only gets in the way...lol! Ask your mother about dignity with respect to childbirth...she'll understand the connection.

Thing is, that's ok though, because you soon learn that while this is all new and scary for your Dad (and y'all), you have a medical team that's good at what they do, care about all of you, nothing's new to them, and you learn to trust them. Unless there's a reason not to go for seeds, as a patient I'd recommend them. Which is to say, I'd do it all over again given the choices. Hope that helps more than it confuses the issue.

Ms. KristenEagle10

As your father is a dentist, I am certain he will make an informed choice that fits his circumstances.

Your mom might benefit more from reading our postings here.
You and your sister, I would just assure you both that the only news you have so far is (comapratively) good and how surprising it is how many men over 50 have gone through this procedure.

I went back to work in 4 weeks (open, not robotic, surgery) but did not do a lot of lifting for two months.

The pads are a hassle but no one at my work knew about my surgery and only the few people I told (my prayer group) at church.  Pads can be dealt with discretely.
Your dad could work in pads without anyone knowing.

If he chooses surgery, your dad should probably not schedule any long-procedure patients for at least six weeks.
This surgery makes the prostrate cancer patient feel weaker for a few more months than most sugeries.
A year later (for many young patients, just six months), most are back to full work-outs and unrestricted lifting.

Sincerely,

CCedar
