I had a prostatecomy five weeks ago.  Due to a drop in my blood pressure during the surgery, my kidneys were stunned and since the procedure I've been having problems with possible renal insufficency as indicated by higher than normal creatine levels in my blood (1.7 was last one).

I've started to take some natural antioxidants (selenium, lycopene, fish oil, vitamins E & D) to fight recurrence of prostate cancer later on.  One supplement called L-Methionine I also use helps to detoxify the body.  However, I do not know if it will increase creatine level or help to decrease it--do any of you know?  I know this is a rather technical question and I'll ask my nephrologist; however, would also appreciate your knowledge.

Also, if anyone has had a similar experience of kidney problems related to a RC, I'd like to know if it was a passing problem or now a chronic one.  Thank you.

I have polycystic kidney disease.

My creatinine level was 3.6 before surgery, then spiked to 4.6 immediately after surgery.

about 3 weeks later it had dropped to 4.1, as I recall, then down to 3.1 about 8 weeks after surgery.....in other words, actually better than pre-surgery.

I suggest you keep in close contact with your nephrologist and monitor your situation.

Best of luck to you.

Age 57
Nerve-sparing, open prostate surgery November 13, 2007
Gleason score 9, PSA 14
Biopsy result - 9 of 12 sticks showed cancer
Despite high Gleason score, cancer was confined to the prostate
Possible post-surgery radiation therapy...decision likely in late April 2008, depending upon PSA at that time
Unrelated surgery January 2008 delayed incontinence recovery, which is now showing good signs of improvement (fraction of a pad a day as of March 2008)
Began using Viagra 3 times a week December 2007 to stimulate blood flow
Began using Osbon Erec-Aid Esteem manual pump for therapy mid-February 2008
Will probably begin using bimix injections in addition to Viagra and pump in May 2008

Did you already check with your nephrologist regarding the natural supplements?  My dad is taking similar ones...selenium, vitamin D3, lycopene, fish oil.  However, I believe that Vitamin d3 is metabolized through the kidneys, therefore, it might be better to wait until your kidneys are in full swing again.  I remember reading that high doses of Vitamin D have resulted in nephrocalcinosis and other kidney related side effects.  Obviously, not in all cases, but not worth risking if your kidneys are not 100% now.  I'm not an expert by any means, so take it for what it is worth.  Good luck and hope you have a speedy recovery!!

Hi seeker!!!
The sage advice you have already received is hard to top. Welcome to the best site for patient to patient interaction that I could find on the 'net. There is a lot of contraversy as what diet works or not. You are in line with a reknowned doctors supplement list. But as my oncologist says, the studies are pending...Still I follow the same list and have added some more but I am at a high rist for recurrance. Remember to update your signature so that we get a clearer picture abou your history and experiences. We are here to help and God Bless you in your recovery. Welcome and stay close.

I'd suggest finding a registered Naturopath...or, if you're fortunate, an MD who is also a naturopath...because it's difficult to consult anybody about merging standard and complementary medicines. In my case, I take fish oil, zyflamend and essiac, both to calm the effects of the brachytherapy, and in the hopes of discouraging any future cancers from getting hold. Good luck.

I appreciate your information, and many thanks for your kind welcome.

BTW:
Diagnosed in October 2007; psa 6.2; biopsy = Gleason 3+3=6; RP on Valentine's Day 2008 (great way to celebrate "romance"); very little surgical discomfort;
post-op biopsy: Gleason 4+4=8; cancer confined to gland; clear margins.
