Hi to all my friends

Let me start by thanking everyone who helped me in getting this far as I'm now on the other side. Also this is my first chance to get back on the net.

Day 1

Surgery scheduled for 7:00 AM by Dr Fagin. Surgery started as scheduled and lasted for 1.5 hours. Recovery lasted for about 1 hour so I was fully awoke by 10:00 AM. According to Dr Fagin everything went well. He said that he held the prostate in his hand and felt the surrounding tissue at the margin and from what he felt everything seems to be OK but we still have to wait for the pathogist report. I took my first walk around the hospital hallway around 2:00 PM which lasted for about 20 minutes. For the rest of the day I took two more walks lasting about 25 minutes each. Most of my pain is in the penis where the catheter is located. The first bag of urine was red but after that everything is clear now. My first night sleep I would say went 60/40.

Day 2.

Woke up brush my tooth and took a walk for about 30 minutes, then had a light breakfirst. Got discharged around 10:00 AM and started my trip back to Dallas around 10:30 AM. The Trip wasn't that bad I had to stop once to drain the bag (had the small bag that was tied around my leg). My two daughters and wife were with me. Got home around 2:15 PM and had to take two pain killers as the 7 insisions are the ones paining more now. They are a little stiff but not unbearable. All in all I think everything went well as I'm in the waiting process again to find out the patholgist report. I'll edit my signature later as I'm feeling a little dizzy now and want to go take a nap.

Day 3:

Well still no BM yet. Continue to take stool softener and Milk of Magnesia and lots of liquid. If no BM by this afternoon will take a supositary and see how that goes. The insision pain is a little better this morning. Had to get up last night around 3:30 AM to take a pain killer which helped.

Later

Welcome to the other side.  Let the healing begin.....Take it easy but keep walking to regain strength and begin training those abdominal muscles and pelvic floor muscles for their new tasks...

Wow Kris - way to go!  You must be made of steel . . . .you are the most coherent after 30 hours of most people . . . .You take care and don't overdo, no matter how good you feel . . .remember, nothing heavier than a milk jug to lift, or a phone book.

Glad to welcome you to the 'other side' . . . soon this will all be a distant memory.

HI Kris and family,

So glad surgery went well and you are home and getting the rest and attention you deserve. Take it easy. My husband thinks he should start running marathons now (don't know why, he never did before) but I'm trying to keep him on level ground. Remember even when you think you have your strength back.. to take it easy.

Thanks for all the kind words guys

The only problem I'm having is since yesterday I haven't had any bowel movements as yet. I'm using the stool softener as prescribed by the doctor but nothing yet. Is this nomal? I'm not having the urge to go. Also I tried to force it but its very difficult as when I pushed its very painful. Any ideas what to to or should I be concerned?

Thanks

KrisP

I experienced painful BMs for several days following surgery. It is due to the close proximity of the prostate to the rectal wall anteriorly. When the prostate is shaved away from the rectal wall, some inflammation occurs, plus the rectal wall now has no supporting structure where the prostate was, so take it easy, don't strain. My MD told me to take a mild laxative if no BM or if straining was needed. Good luck, this will get better over the next couple of weeks, plenty of water and fiber, along with walking will help with the discomfort.

Kris,
I gave my husband a regular stool softener with mild laxative (generic pill kind) and it worked within 6 hours. He had a different kind of surgery that you did but I think they work the same either way.

Hi Kris. Glad to see you on the other side. You have been given some good ideas and the only thing I could add would be to walk but don't overdo it. It was amazing how good I felt after the surgery and I did too much a couple of times and my body felt it. Now take care and keep us informed on your journey.

Kris . .. remember how you cleaned yourself out in the days before surgery, and probably ate nothing or very little yesterday . . .give it a chance, your bowel will work . . .keep up the stool softener, and try and avoid beverages, etc. that will build gas as that can be very painful.

Wonderful news Kris...so Happy you made it ok.  Take it easy now and get rest and follow the doctors orders.  Do you plan to return to Austin to see Dr Fagin to have the catheter removed or do it locally in Dallas?  I will be there next Tuesday for surgery on Wed morning with Dr Fagin.  Would be nice to say hello if can be arranged.  But, in any event, I am happy you came through it ok.  Good luck on the path report...sounds good what Dr Fagin told you.  Keep us posted on your progress.

Hi KrisP,

Welcome to 'the other side'. Sounds like everything went well for you thus far. Now just take it easy for a bit and don't 'force' anything.

Hoping for a complete and speedy recovery for you.

W e l c o m e H o m e   Hi ~ Kris, Great to see you back so quickly.   You are now on the healing/recovery stepping-stone… and that means taking it easy, listening to your body (not your mind)… your body will tell you when you’ve over done it and you really don’t want to get to that point.   Did we mention…. Don’t lift or yank your self up quickly…. Etc…. listen to your friends here because We’ve been where you are now!!!       The constipation issue is a biggie.   We had a prescript ion stool softener and we needed more.   The pharmacist suggested a veg lax across-the-counter and it worked great… and in a short period of time.    Continue moving forward with "all of us" beside you! Hugs from Lee & Buddy

Kris

Sounds great and you are well on your way to recovery. Just don't over do it and give yourself a chance to heal at a nice pace. Here'e hoping the pathology report is all clear.

Perfectly normal and very common. Following the cleanout and lack of eating it does take time to get things moving again. Avoid straining as earlier suggested, while using the softener and perhaps a mild laxativ. All will be normal very shortly....slowly build up the eating rather than hoeing straight in. Well done on the surgery and good luck with the pathology.

Hi Krisp,
Glad the surgery went well. My Doc sent me home with stool softeners also. It took me about 3 to 4 days for a normal BM. If you try and force it, you will probably get some blood in the catheter bag. Don't be alarmed, thats pretty normal right after surgery. Be patient and it will happen on its own.

It's good to be back home, isn't it? Now, it's just that pesky catheter.

Try adding a little Milk of Magnesia along with the stool softener. That's what did it for us.

Congrats - sounds like the path news is going to be excellent!

Hey Kris,
Welcome to the other side! I was a couple of days home before my first bowel movement. I was sure something was wrong, but it's quite normal. Things will happen in their own good time. Sounds kind of crazy though, doesn't it? Waiting to celebrate your first post-op poop? Anyway, heal well, and keep us all posted!
Best,
Mike

My doc told me the first BM would be 3-5 days post-surgery...it was day 4 for me.  Don't try to force it!!  Walk, drink plenty of fluids and take the stool softeners.  You'll be fine.

Hi Kris.  Glad things went well - it is great to be on this side of the healing process.  I also took a stool softner for about 6 weeks post surgery.  I am now off of it but don't be afraid to take it for as long as you need to.  I was always one not to take much medicine unless I absolutely had to.  I have found through this process that there are lots of good drugs out there and I shouldn't be afraid to use them.  Trust you will continue to make good progress and continue to let us know how things are going.  David
