My hubby got a new bicycle 1 week before diagnosis - he had to wait 6 weeks after biopsy before considering a ride, and it was deep winter in the Midwest. He managed one ride before surgery and now, at 6 weeks post-op, is itching to get on that hard little seat that will be wedged up there near the anastomosis, etc. Any experience with this would be appreciated - doc standard is bike ok at 6 weeks, but this is a serious rider, not casual. he will be on that seat at least an hour a time.

Other cyclists please share.......also, what about Rides for Pca? Know of any?

FairRider,

My GP suggested that I wait a year before I ride again but I also had a partial nephrectomy and radiation treatments 5 1/2 months after RP so my healing time was extended. Perhaps he should consider a seat that "includes a cut out for soft tissue protection" as one of the descriptions for a seat at Bike Nashbar states. I bought a new bike about 6 weeks ago, I've only been able to go out a half dozen times or so but last week I went for a 30 mile ride and after 25 mile I was very sore in that area and had to do some out-of-seat riding. So when I got home I ordered the seat referred to above.

But on the other hand a friend who had an RP (his was robotic, mine was not) 2 months after I did is a serious rider, he didn't wait long and he had no problems at all.

Doing a quick search for PCa rides, there are few around the country.

Thanks, Ken. Wow, similar stats. We have been amazed that with such a small prostate, called 'soft' by 3 surgeons, a lowish PSA of 4.37, that we ended up with an extension and now a stage 3. You sound similar with a lower PSA, small tumor, etc........man, this disease is a real bugger - no good bio-markers yet to impact all the 'upstaging' I keep reading about.

Good luck to you and I will google for PCa rides - I just hope he can ride some before he has hernia surgery this summer. Yea, hernia popped up after Robotic RP - pumped up with too much gas???

I had no surgical complications or other physical issues, so was able to start bicycling again at about 6 weeks.  My suggestions: Ease into it rather than doing one hour right away and use a cushioned seat.  I did fine.

I went into my surgery last December in pretty good shape, running and biking daily.  I really think that helped with my recovery.

My doc "released me" to resume normal activity levels after four weeks.  After two weeks of easy pace stationary bike riding, I resumed "Spinning" classes at week six.  Now, five months post-surgery, I continue to Spin a few times a week and run four to five days a week.

Age - 57
PSA - July7, 2007 - 4.87
Confirming biopsy - August 30, 2007
Gleason scores of 6 (3+3) and 7 (3+4)
DaVinci surgery December 3, 2007 - Robert Wood Johnston Hospital, New Jersey

Cathether removed December 10, 2007
No incontinence after Day 2, December 5, 2007
Fully functioning sexual activity Day 2, December 5, 2007

Post-op pathology report confirmed Gleason of 7 (3+4), 30% involved by tumor, no positive margins.

Follow-up blood work scheduled for March, 2008
