Seems a bit strange to me to be taking the meds....

From Avodart's web site:

Indication and Important Safety Information about AVODART® (dutasteride):

AVODART is used to treat urinary symptoms of Enlarging Prostate, and to reduce the risk of acute urinary retention (AUR) and prostate surgery. AUR is a condition, possibly requiring surgery, where the prostate is so enlarged that it completely blocks urine coming from the bladder. Only your health care provider can tell if your symptoms are from Enlarging Prostate and not a more serious condition, such as prostate cancer.

I took it prior to my saturation biopsy to reduce the size of the prostate. Smaller it is, the less needles needed. I never heard it having any effect on reducing psa, other than a slight drop maybe by reducing the glands size.

Avodart and Proscar are commonly used in a process called triple androgen blockade or ADT3.  The same logic that Avodart shrinks a normal prostate is considered useful that it can shrink cancerous prostate cells as well.  Snuffy Myers book is based on diet and triple angrogen blockade, as is the practice by Bob Liebowitz.

Proscar - chemical name - Finasteride
Avodart - chemical name - Dutasteride

Bob Liebowitz study...Using Finasteride with HT...

Myers Article...

Both have shown the ability to lower PSA post RP.  There is also evidence that Finasteride can be used to maintain low PSA levels when using intermittent hormone therapy (IHT) during the periods that LHRH and GNRH agonists are stopped.

Another study is being expolred the is testing using Finasteride as a preventive or delaying agent in people with high risk of getting prostate cancer ~ African American or heredity cases.
