I was just wondering how Gene and Kw and Berb are doing with the AUS device. We are going in on Monday for Pete's operation...His surgery is at 3pm and they are releasing him the next morning...I guess we are just so hopeful that it will be a good choice that I want to hear some good news from you guys.. Hey Divo, I'm two weeks post op. Most of the swelling is going down. Not too much soreness. Incisions are healing well. Will probably not be much for me to report until my Oct. 6th activation date.
FYI - The best Ice pack I found to work is the flexable bag type that you put ice cubes in. I just hope your ice maker can keep up. Tough choice between a cold drink and ice for the "boys"!
Good Luck and let us know how you do. If you ever want to talk you can e-mail me from my profile and I will give you my cell number.

As for me, my AUS is working well.  There is no reason to fear this will not work for Pete. There are so few drops per day that I do not wear a pad.  I always hated them, especially when I had no othe choice. Pete will be delighted with the results after the six-week waiting period.  Tell Pete some of us are praying for him.

Hi Divo,

I'm very happy with my AUS. My results are not quite as good as Gene's - I have more than a few drops a day. I usually put on a fresh small liner type pad in the morning and change it in the evening.

I am getting no leakage in normal activity, or even in strenuous activity such as running or lifting. I get some leakage after urinating because I don't wait the 50-60 seconds for the valve to re-shut completely. I also get leakage from the urge to urinate when my bladder reaches what it believes is it's capacity. Due to lack of normal activity over the last 18 months, my bladder capacity is only half what it used to be, and I'm told I should hold off as long as I reasonably can to stretch it and re-train it. These urges come in spasms of several seconds duration, usually starting when I get around 1/2 a cup full of urine in the bladder, and it is during these episodes that a small squirt sometimes gets past the AUS. I'm hopeful that over time this will go away, and for now I'm catching this leakage in a small liner-type pad which I change in the morning and the evening.

But compared to what I had before the AUS, this is nothing.

Berb
59 when diagnosed, now 60 years old
Da Vinci surgery Jan 10, 2007, nerves spared, no cancer detected outside prostate
Pre surgery PSA 8, Gleeson 3+4=7, T1C, 3 out of 12 biopsies had cancer
Complication 1: urine favoured drain tube over catheter, extra time in hospital, catheter in for 2 weeks
Complication 2 - urinary tract infection - Citrobacter (hospital bug), 6 weeks antibiotics cleared up
Complication 3 - fungal growth on genitals (candida albicans) probably from antibiotics
Aug'07 Urodynamic study for continuing incontinence 8 pads per day; diagnosed bladder neck stenosis
Oct'07 CT scan indicated nothing abnormal; cystoscopy showed narrowing at anastimosis - dialated
Dec'07 averaging 9 pads a day, started acupuncture (no benefit after 10 treatments)
Jun'08 AUS fitted
Aug'08 AUS activated - highly effective
Post surgery PSA tests: all undetectable
