How do I subscribe to a thread?

I thought as the creator of a thread, I would be subscribed automatically. That's not the case, so how do I get email notifications of changes to a thread?

Did you place a check mark in-> Notify me of reply postings by e-mail.

Apparently, if you do not check the box for emailing notifications of replies when you first create a thread, you cannot 'edit' the thread later to add that option. I've tried twice unsuccessfully.
