Prostate Surgery (RP) in July 2004. First PSA following surgery was 0.02
PSA was at 0.04 for a couple of years

then PSA up to 0.06

Rceived PSA results yesterday (5/15/09)..PSA=0.08.

Should I start considering additional treatment?...radiation?

Thanks for any information or recommendations...Burgh

I think you should be wise and continue to monitor your psa. Keep in mind you are still a zero even though in the ultra sensitive test it is indicating a slight yet noticeable increase. I would not jump into radiation if I did not have to me. Believe it or not radiation was one of the toughest parts of my journey. You may still end up doing it. I would recommend maybe a couple of opinions from doctors. One thing is for sure some of our wise folks here at HW will offer you the right advice.
Thanks for joining us here at HW, i wish you were here for different reasons but the fact is you aren't. Please know we care very much for you and your well being. Hang around and join in.

Hi Burgh,
I am sorry you are having this issue. I too had this scenario play out beginning February a year ago. My PSA went from 0.07, 0.08, 0.09 and then to 0.1 by September. My surgeon said he deemed it a recurrence with 3 consecutive rises. I consulted with a Rad Doc and he agreed and said the best shot was now when the tumor volume was very low. I had my SRT and ended it on 01/14/09 and had my 1st post RT PSA last week and it came back <0.04 which is as low as my Docs assay reads. Just my case but I would keep and eye on things. I wish you the best.

Hi Guys...Thanks for the replies, what were the difficult aspects associated with radiation? what were the specific sideaffects? I live in Seattle, so we have several good facilities close by, should I need additional treatment. Sure helps to talk with others that suffer with this.

Burgh...

My story is similar to David's (see my signature). The only side effects I experienced was some anal discomfort with some minor bleeding. I didn't experience any fatigue or diarrhea as reported by many others. I felt totally 'back to normal' about 4 weeks after the procedure. Each radiation session ( I had 33) takes about 15 minutes except for the initial setup (when I was tattooed and pictures were taken). That took maybe one hour. For me, the biggest down side was having to travel to the hospital 5 days a week (Mon - Fri).
Hope this helps a little.
All the best to you.

PSA on the 26 Jan., 09, =0.05. PSA tests now every 6 month

Like Magaboo I had very little side effects. I had a little fatigue and loose stools which didn't last long after the treatments ended. I had Image Guided RT and had to have a Cat Scan daily to line up the treatments and I had 38 treatments for a total of 68 GY.
