I didn't think that HIFU was a new therapy. Not sure but I think it has been overseas for several years now. Haven't kept up on this, but has it had FDA approval for use in the US yet?

Hardly new. HIFU has been used successfully in Europe for more than a decade- I have read that a lobby on behalf of urological surgeons and radiotherapists have kept it out of the US to this point- been available in Canada and Mexico for years.

63 years old-tumor discovered on digital exam- biopsy December 2008-
4 of 12 samples positive-all on right side
Gleason 3+3=6
PSA-3
Otherwise excellent health.
Brachytherapy- May 19, 2009 -so far, so good.

With better prostate cancer screening, especially PSA tests, more men are being diagnosed with prostate cancer and at younger ages. They are also being diagnosed at earlier stages. Given the serious possibility of diminution of quality of life from traditional treatment by radiation or prostectomy there has been a new interest in treatments which can attack localized cancers with far less chance of side effects. These focused techniques, including cryogenics, ultrasound, and microwave, offer a middle ground between watchful waiting and traditional therapies for men with localized prostate cancer.
Age at diagnosis 66, PSA 5.5
Biopsy 12/08 12 cores, 8 positive
Gleason 3 + 4 = 7
CAT scan 1/09 negative, Bone scan 1/09 negative

Robotic surgery 03/03/09 Catheter Removed 03/08/09
Post surgical pathology report. Lymph nodes negative, Seminal vesicles negative
Surgical margins positive, Capsular penetration extensive Gleason 4 + 3 = 7
At 6 weeks: 1 pad/day, 1 pad/night -- mostly dry at night.

Let's be real. It will never cost $6,000 in the US. The FDA won't approve it for another 5 to 10 years. When Caverject goes off the market for 18 months because the FDA had an issue with the labeling, I don't think HIFU will get anywhere quickly.

You also need to read about the awlful side effects when something goes wrong. It's not a perfect solution except for the early diagnosed guys.
