It would be helpful for the cost to the owner of buying bandwidth if we could make our Signatures as short and concise as possible, while retaining the main facts of our Journey.  I would ask every one to reevaluate their Signature file and see if they can make it shorter and concise by removing double line spaces, editing sentences and stories down to short, informational lines to share with us. Having as short and consie signature as possible is really needed if you go to other areas of the forum with large and long sigs.  We in Prostate Cancer Forum are the only group allowed to exceed the 10 line signature limit, and it seems each time one of us posts in another forum, people in other forums will invariably ask why can they do that and we can't, which causes problems for the moderators in the other forums.

If you post multiple times in the same thread, you do have the option of unchecking your signature posting each time you do so.  But you will have to rememeber to do it manually each time.

Sorry, a lot of info you may not have wanted, but the short version is we all need to help the owner in reducing costs wherever possible.

Or so I thought.....I did the edit and "Submit" but it didn't take??

We could also Uncheck the Include Signature if we post in the same thread more then one time..

But,,,I'm testing to see if my sig is shorter.

Yes, I forgot about that part.  If you post multiple times in the same thread, you do have the option of unchecking your signature posting each time you do so.  But you will have to rememeber to do it manually each time.  Like this...

If bandwidth is the issue, then the thing we can do to help is to reduce the number of characters in each signature. How to do this is not so obvious because our posts are automatically augmented with extra hidden characters (HTML tags) to control the way they are displayed by web browsers. I looked at the underlying code for a bunch of sigs and present the following advice

First: Be telegraphic. For example, say; Gleason 3+3=6, rather than; My Gleason score was 3 + 3 = 6 the difference is 13 characters rather than 30 (yes, spaces count.)

Second: Avoid formatting. That means any of the things that you do with the formatting buttons such as bold, italics, color, etc. Making even a short word bold more than doubles its length.

Third: Avoid emoticons in sigs. The code just to insert an emoticon runs about 100 characters and an animated emoticon itself is the equivalent about 2,500 characters.

Remember that our sigs get sent to everyone who views a thread, so that any excess characters are multiplied over and over. By the way, inserting blank lines is not all that harmful, adding only four characters, although I think too much of it is ugly.

If anyone would like advice on shortening their sig, just post to this thread and I’ll try to help.
Age at diagnosis 66, PSA 5.5
Biopsy 12/08 12 cores, 8 positive
Gleason 3 + 4 = 7
CAT scan 1/09 negative, Bone scan 1/09 negative

Robotic surgery 03/03/09 Catheter Removed 03/08/09
Post surgical pathology report. Lymph nodes negative, Seminal vesicles negative
Surgical margins positive, Capsular penetration extensive Gleason 4 + 3 = 7
At 6 weeks: 1 pad/day, 1 pad/night -- mostly dry at night.
At 10 weeks: no pad at night -- slight unpredictable leakage day/1 pad.

Thanks, James.

Done. Just to let everyone know, an updated signature will not show up immediately, so don't get concerned if your new signature doesn't appear right after you edit it.

Best regards,

Barry

Or, if you wish a larger sig, then you could always click the Donate button above and donate some dollars to the cause.  I have been remiss in not putting up the 'pass the hat' post I usually do twice a year.  A $20 donate thru Paypal would be appreciated by Peter.  lol
