On one one of the kegel sites, they liken the smooth muscle to mucles in our neck, that are constantly expanding and contracting to keep our head erect.
Apparently, the sphincter muscle has the same job, to handle the varying stresses of sitting or standing, or coughing, etc. For this reason they recommend two distinct type of kegels. One is a rapid, as fast as we can, contract and relax, contract and relax, etc. up to 40 or 50 reps a session, 3 times day, to strengthen the smooth muscle. Fo the strated muscle, they have the hold for 10 oer 12 seconds per rep. In my kegel research, I found mulitple suggestions of how to do kegels. This one mad the most sense to me.
