I am 5 weeks post op. Dealing with the incontinence and ED most of us deal with.  I tried the pump for the first time yesterday.  Tried the battery operated one.  Didn't feel any suction.  Tried the manual pump and it worked great and very quickly.
The problem was that the plastic tube being suctioned into my groin hurt a bit. The rubber band was uncomfortable, even though I tried the largest size, and my erection was 1/2 of what it was pre op.  My questions are
1-- Do any of these things improve wih use, and
2---Do any of you have any tips for improving the benefits of the pump.'
Thank you
7/09---routine physical, 4.4 psa

When you are just "exercising" there is no need for the rubber band at all, so I suggest leave it off. You will of course have to add it eventually when you try intercourse.

Some things you can try: trim your pubic hair and use some lubricant. This can vary from soap and water all the way up to KY Jelly and the like. This helps form a good seal, and may be what you were missing with the battery operated one.

I don't use lube at all, as I find it messy. Rather I pump a little, shake to unstick things from inside the tube, pump again, shake and so on. I have to press firmly at first to keep the seal, but as the erection progresses, the base of the shaft of my penis plugs up the tube and helps maintain the seal. For this to work, penis size and tube size have to be a good match.

If you use the pump every day, you will find improvements, but I have found it takes a lot of practice to find the methods that work reliably for intercourse -- and in fact I am still learning.
Age 63 at diagnosis, now 64.
No symptoms; PSA 5.7; Gleason 4+5=9; cancer in 4 of 12 cores.
Non-nerve sparing RRP on 7 March 2008.
Two nights in hospital; catheter out after 7 days.
Continent; no pads needed from the get-go.
Pathology showed organ confined and negative margins. Gleason downgraded to 4+4=8.
6-week : <0.05
7-month: <0.05
13-month: 0.07 (start of a trend?)
19-month: 0.09 (maybe)
After a learning curve, Bimix injections (0.2ml) worked well. From 14 months, occasional nocturnal erections. Have "graduated" to just the pump.

Hi Runer,
Welcome to HW.
I have a manual pump. I do it in the shower and use shaving cream to make the seal. I pump it up and let it sit while I brush my teeth. I then take it of and let things deflate - 30 seconds, and then repump again while shaving.

There is nothing erotic or pleasurable about it. Darn.
