I have always heard that prior to surgery, if you have had an orgasm  within 72 hours prior to your PSA blood test, that the accuracy can be skewed and your true number will be altered or could be. Does anyone know if that is fact or fiction? And what about after surgery .... would the same hold true?

Larry

I read in Dr. Walsh's book that having an orgasm before the PSA test will increase your PSA.  I don't know about after surgery.  I would think that since your prostate is gone there would be no increase in PSA as any PSA comes from prostate cells that escaped before surgery.
4 biopsies over 4 years starting in 2006, 4th biopsy showed 5% of one core Gleason 3+3=6.  PSA in 2005 6.0, rose to PSA 18 shortly before surgery.  Chose surgery over radiation due to conflicts in PSA versus biopsies.  PSA 18, Gleason 3+3+6, Age 58, Rising PSA since 1999, Biopsy 5% of one core
Robotic surgery 10/26/09  T2B Tumor 30% of prostate  involving left & right lobes  NOMX Gleason 3+4=7  Urethral Resection margins &  resection surface clean Seminal vessicles clean.

Larry,

When you have a prostate, the guidance is to NOT have sexual activity within 48 hours of a PSA test because ejaculation will elevate the PSA. (I guess you've read 72 hours; more common guidance is 48...close enough.)

Sexual activity makes absolutely no difference in a PSA test for a man who has had a radical prostatectomy...absolutely none.
