Hey ~ Aimzee & Ron,        Here's a special welcome and a little help to guide you along the way.... stay close!!!   It’s really important that you start your own thread so others can see it and share information with you.   It’s also a great way to let your thoughts out and it really makes this journey easier ~ just by being here.   Continue reading other threads ~ that’s what this journey is all about ! Sharing information.   You may not hear from the original thread member ~ but it will bring concerns to the front and that’s a good thing!!   Buddy and I have moved on to new stepping-stones in Our Journey but periodically I’m drawn back…. That’s what HealingWell is all about .   Helping others who have just started on this road of uncertainties.   Take care and stay close . HUGS from Lee

Ms. Aimzee & Ron,

Ask your surgeon about retropubic surgery.   Ms. Bluebirds threads are very informative about this procedure.  Retropubic recovery times are comparable to Laperascopic/DaVinci surgeries.

Concerning Ron's previous surgeries:
My surgeons spent an hour starting me on DaVinci  but due to adhesions from many previous abdominal surgeries (only got the camera through) - then had to do a "bikini cut" into the pubic cavity.  (This is a lower abdominal incision.)
Ron's previous hernia repairs will likely have developed many adhesions that can get in the way of robotic/laperascopic surgery.

HELLO Ms. Blue and Mr. Tony!

I too was just quickly logging on to look for information on Dennis Hopper's passing.

Perhaps this high profile tragedy will slow the trend to discourage testing.

I still only have internet access at work.

God Bless all of you here as you help one another!

After all these years, I see a thread I never knew was here. THANK YOU! Now, we have a new problem...our son (age 44 yrs.) won't go for a PSA test. He does not have insurance and cannot afford it. Is there somewhere we can direct him for free or low cost testing? THANK YOU!

Look on USToo.org to see if there is a support group in his area. They might know if there are any screenings coming up in September in the local area.

Also check with local hospitals to see if they have programs. There are still a few out there.

Free tests are getting hard to find as the anti-screening forces have caused many hospitals to stop including them in men's health events.

There is certainly no rush, and he can wait for the next insurance enrollment period for 2015. Having a first degree relative with PC puts him at higher risk, but the risk is only somewhat higher. At 44, his risk is very low - waiting a few months isn't likely to make a difference.

Aimzee, how much is a PSA test around you?

I disagree with Allen. At 44 and with his dad having PCa he should ave already gotten a baseline four years ago.

I think the PSA test a quest labs is under $100.

Thank you, 142. You were one of the first friends I met here. Remember the August Surgeries (2010) thread? So many nice people there. I have never seen one so long, so helpful, and focusing on women's views. Many of the gents that posted there are still here. Thank you for your response.

Allen, unfortunately my son cannot afford insurance and none is provided at work. He is a smoker and enjoys partying. (Now, how can he afford that?) Neither Ron or I smoke or drink. I know, I know I should cut the apron strings. However, I don't want him to suffer from PSc. Thanks!

Many hospital systems do a once a year free screening, that would be the first place I would look if money or lack of insurance is an issue.

With your husband dealing with PC, and your son being that age, I would hope he would gladly get a baseline, not only for his own use, but for you and your husband's peace of mind.

My oldest son (just turned 37), obliged me, and had a base line done at age 35 as part of a normal yearly physical. My youngest son (31) plans to do his on his 35th birthday, to make his old man feel better.

Let us know how it goes.

David

P.S. Hope Ron is still doing as well as expected

It's not that expensive compared to many tests. Probably less than $100 and most labs give a substantial discount if insurance doesn't pay. I know for a fact that Labcorp gives at least a 25% discount.

I'm sure he's fine, but it's good to have a baseline at this age and heck....why not a dre while we're at it... if he balks, have him email me so I can explain what can happen at age 44 when you least expect it....

Tell him that this is the easy one...and in a few years it's colonoscopy time...are we all up to date with ours??? Colon and bladder cancer risks are higher for us PC guys...but women need to be reminded also of colon cancer screening...

Thanks,
Jerry
