I feel cheated. 42 gram prostate, no complications, PSA still less than zero.. one nerve suppose to be spared, NO full erections three and 3/4 years after surgery. No erectile problems prior to surgery..none

Yes I am still angry, I made a mistake choosing surgery
PSA July 2006 4.7 , Nodule found
biopsy 10/06 very agressive gleason4+4=8 identified
DaVinci surgery, Sutter Hospital, Sacramento, Ca. January 2007
Post Ob confirms, gleason 4+4=8 with no extension or invasion
no long term continence problems
post surgery PSA continues to be undetectable at 3 years
ED continues, using bimix

I had the open nerve sparing RP. 40 grams. ED gone after about 8-12 month.

Had SRT about 2 years after RRP. Erections became weaker after about 6 month, but back to normal (no ED) about 12 month after completion of the SRT.

Note: Normal = 90% of pre cancer; 99% with chemicals (Pills).

Age 56, 50 grams, nerve sparing both sides, post op gleason 6 in 4% of tissue.  100% continent four weeks after surgery.  14 months after RRP surgery, ciallis doesn't help at all.  Bimix works 100%.  In fact I can take ciallis with bimix and ciallis has no additional effect one way or the other.  Had firm errections before surgery.  Doctor who had done over a thousand surgeries told me his published stats were 80% chance that if you were below age 60 there was an 80% chance of useable errections using ciallis at one year post surgery.  I think those stats have been exagerated, or maybe  I am just angry that I am on the 20% side.  When I decided to have surgery I really believed that things were going to turn out better.  I wasn't even concerned about it.  Started using vaccum pump and ciallis for therapy soon after catheter out.  Started bimix at 3 months.  After nine months of essentially "nothing" on my own, I begin to suspect that this would be permanent.  At this point I think that it is permanent since there are no signs of progress at all.  This was another of those doctors that is supposedly  "world class", "teaches the techniques to other doctors", "one of first to use the procedure in 2003", "people come from all over the world to get surgery there", "keeps data base to constanty improve procedure", "highly trained assistants", "high volume, more than five surgeries per week", "slick website".  I am skeptical about the ED stats.  Like this thread questions, I wonder if the larger than normal prostate is the cause of my ED.

Good idea James

I had nerve-sparing da Vinci surgery July 2009 and SRT from April to June 2010 (both while aged 49)

My biopsy said my prostate was 26cc
Post-op pathology said it was 43 grams, but that must surely have included the weight of the seminal vesicles too.

Compared to what I could have been I would say that I have no ED.

I had my first erection while the catheter was still in place about 48 hours after surgery. It was painful and I had to take steps to make it go away, i.e. squeeze the glans and think about my tax-return.

Since about a month after surgery it was clear that I didn’t have ED, and also that my Libido is fine. I also get nocturnal erections.

However, before my SRT started I would still reckon that my penis was functioning at 25% of what it was pre-op, ie sex was half as often and I was taking twice as long to get erect. It was also slightly softer and shorter, and orgasms were much less spectacular .

SRT has made me very tired at times, so I won’t draw too many conclusions too soon about how things are now, but little Alf is now functioning at about 10% of what he was before surgery and orgasms are so small as to be non-existent.

Geoff's surgery was 8/9/10 and he was having "stirrings" with the cath in. He started cialis at 2 weeks after surgery( NEIrish-he did have backaches and headaches at first, but the doctor said that usually goes away after a while and it did). He started having erections at night and waking up with them right away. Both nerve bundles were spared, his prostate was 33 grams, and his erections at 6 weeks work just fine.

Renee
Husband diagnosed 3/10
Age 56, PSA 4.7, free 7.6%

Post Op: Gleason 3+4=7
Negative surgical margins and lymph nodes
No seminal vesicle and angiolymphaic invasion
perineural invasion present
Both nerve bundles spared
Cath out @1 week, totally pad free 2 weeks later

Hey folks, 34grams here, both nerves spared, no issues before and really only need alittle more stimulation to be 100% now. The only thing i notice now is that you can loose it alot quicker so you better get busy! Be well, Tim

41 grams, Cialis for a about a week, erections came soon and were hard but too painful to sustain. Pain has gradually subsided over a year. And, you didn't ask, but continence is as good as before surgery. Not as good as 30 years ago, but I'll take it.

DJ

How about age?

I have often wondered if anyone has studied the correlation of post PCA surgery and age to ED.  In other words are older guys more prone to erectile problems than younger guys.  Does a 65 year old have less  erectile success post surgery than a 45 year old?  and... all other things being equal is surgery , radiation or brachytherapy a major influence in post treatment ED success?

It sort of makes sense that a younger guy will do better than and older guy, but what are the real statistics?
