notpollini posted with a question in a 3 year old thread, so I am moving it to his own thread, so it will stay current and get better responses. He said:

I had a radical robotic prostatectomy in January of 2010. I am currently 55. The cancer (Gleason 6) was entirely contained, P.S.A. < 0.1. Continence is very good (I never had more than minor leakage, and now only wear the lightest pad when I leave the house just for more confidence). However, it is nine months out, and nary an erection. I've tried Viagra several times at intervals (I cannot afford to take it every day), but so far with no success. Sometimes I wake up with the sensation of an erection, but then realize that it's like the phantom-limb syndrome. My surgeon told me that there was as yet no (unbiased) clinical proof for the claim that taking Viagra or the other inhibitors every day increases the chance of regaining erectile function, which is why I decided not to go into debt trying. But the situation has lasted longer than I expected. I also understand that men who were taking hypertension medicine (as I do) prior to the surgery are less likely to regain function; but mostly I'm worried that my ability to have genital intercourse (I'm heterosexual) without mechanical aids has now been imperiled because I did not try to induce erection using medication early on after the surgery. Thoughts?

I also have another unusual question. I receive spam (as I'm sure many do) about Viagra but also about these herbal products that are supposed to allow you to increase penis size. Do these herbal treatments have any efficacy with respect to erectile function (they supposedly seem to operate on similar principles of opening/enlarging vascular capacity)?

Thanks for any replies.

Three things.
1- Pump - every day that you do not wake up with an erection means that your penis is not getting the workout and nourishment it needs. Yes, pumping brings in mostly venal blood, but it is better than nothing. Atrophy will set in if you do not stretch and nourish those tissues. At the very least go to a sex shop and get an inexpensive penis pump to use twice a day for 15 minutes. or take a look at vitalitymedical.com or usamediquip.com for good pumps sold OTC.

2 - Ignore the spam. it is all a crock of bull.

3 - go to www.alldaychemist.com and order their sildenafil citrate (generic viagra). it's 56 cents a pill.

oh...one more thing. ********* every day - even with a limp penis.

Welcome...and stick around. these guys know a lot.

3 - go to
www.franktalk.org ED website for PCa guys

ED - at one year, ED is fine with viagra.

Thank you for the recommendations. I just read an on-line article about Silagra (generic Viagra) and I will probably go ahead and order from alldaychemist. I will also look into the pump. I'm not surprised concerning the spam.

I'll be seeing my urologist next week and will probably run all this by him as well. But in the meantime, I'm grateful for the advice.

Oh, one other thing. The generics from India ... are they safe? Are you currently using them?

There are hundreds of posts on this site from guys who find the meds from ADC safe and effective.

The return of erectile function can be slow, so 9 months is not the time to give up

There are ways to have fun in bed without penetration. It takes a loving partner and lots of communication but it can be done.

This goes without saying! But I'd like to try to preserve all the options if possible, of course.

I've read and heard repeatedly the explanation that "it can take anywhere from 6 to 18 months, even longer sometimes", but one thing has never been clear to me about this. Is the return of function sudden, or gradual? Is it common not to have any erections at all for nine months, and then suddenly one morning you wake up and, lo and behold, there it is? Or when you say, "can be slow", does that mean, for instance, that you start to have erections early on, but they are not strong enough or last long enough to sustain intercourse, but these gradually improve over a period?
