i went to a urologist who gave me a DRE which was normal and a free psa blood test of which i get the results monday.
prior to my 1st psa i had a painful DRE from my female primary care doctor also had sex a day before.
i'm worried sick but hoping those incidents could be the reason for the high reading.
has anyone had a high reading and then a normal one the next test?
thanks to all, this is alarming

"has anyone had a high reading and then a normal one the next test?"

Yes indeed. I would get my money back from any U-doc who took blood for a PSA test AFTER a DRE and sex.. Wait a week and try again..If it's STILL high, try a run of antibiotics to address any possible prostate infection. Test again. If it's STILL high, then you can start worrying...

Higher is better with Free PSA. I had a free PSA of 25% and prior to my biopsy, my Uro told me I had a 10% chance of PCa with a 25 Free PSA and a 5.1 regular PSA. Since I had PCa, nine other guys had no cancer--->I hope your are one of them!

Dan
Here are some of my stats:
Age:54
Father diagnosed with PC at age 72 - wasn't contained to prostate when found in 1992.
My PSA rose from 3.2 to 5.1 over the course of 1.5 years with Free PSA at 25% for the last two tests.
DRE showed no evidence of tumor but Uro thought my prostate was a little large for someone my age
PCa diagnosed 4/6/10 after biopsy on 4/1/10
1 out of 12 biopsy samples was positive with 5% of biopsy sample cancerous
Gleason 3+4
Da Vinci surgery on 6/1/10
Pathology report shows cancer confined to prostate and all other tissue clean
PSA tested on 7/15/10: Zero Club membership card issued (trial membership with 90 day renewal)

As many arguments as there are about what can / can not cause PSA to be high, all the books and sites I've seen agree that sex within the 48 hours prior will cause a spike in PSA. Others think that abstaining for 3-5 days is best.

So, I agree that a retest is a good idea.

There are both opinions on having blood drawn immediately after a DRE - I had two uros give me opposing opinions. It does make common sense that anything which disturbs the prostate should be avoided (i.e. now that it matters, ask that the blood be drawn first just in case).

I had a "free psa" done after my first/only high PSA, but don't know the result, only that my GP was on the phone with me before putting down the fax to schedule me off to the urologist.

And as always, a word of Welcome. Lets just hope that you come back telling us it was a false alarm. We do allow resignations smilewinkgrin
