I completed my 44 IMRT treatments April 1, 2009 and have had relatively little side effects from the radiation until recently. In the past month I have experienced several episodes of bedwetting. Is this related to the radiation or do I have a new problem to worry about?

I assume that this was primary treatment for you? Because my husband has elected the same treatment protocol, I have read extensively on IMRT/IGRT. I have gotten the impression that late bladder effects are uncommon (but certainly a possibility), and involve 'irritative' type symptoms rather than incontinence. The possible late side effects I listed in my notes included cystitis, frequency and bladder contracture (which would seem to involve pelvic pain from bladder spasms and inability to completely void).

Have you begun any new medications that could be causing you to sleep so soundly that you are not awakening to respond to signals to empty your bladder? You don't mention any daytime bladder symptoms, so it seems unlikely that you have an infection, but I would certainly see a urologist to rule it out if I were you.

Please let us know what you learn, and I wish you well.

I'm no radiation expert by any means, but I recall my uro mentioning that delayed incontinence can be a side effect of radiation. He said it often happens a year or more later. When he discussed treatment options, I recall him saying that incontinence was immediate with surgery and often delayed with radiation.

I certainly wouldn't take my word for it, though. This is probably worth a call to your radiation doc. Good luck.

I found this article, posted by a prostate oncology group, to be helpful. It contains a chart referencing long-term side effects by percentage for each of three treatment options.

Hopefully, your current bed-wetting episodes are unrelated to the cancer or treatments. Your urologist should be able to help you, either way. Good luck...

My brother completed radiation treatments last April and to date has no side effects. I had surgery in December 2008 and suffered incontinence until March 2010. At this time we both are in good health and we both have undetectable PSA and no problems with incontinence.
