Background:
An actor in NYC collapses on stage, in the scene where he is supposed to collapse. Nobody knows that he is actually sick. Medics arrive, whisk the poor guy away.

As reported in the NY Times today, the 61 year old is suffering from advanced PC and has refused hormone therapy, and has opted instead for a raw food diet to boost his immune system.

What the hell is this?

Well..for example...the pesticides we digest from eating a simple apple isn't good for ya...Your body has to waste time dealing with the bad stuff...

Have a feeling this gentleman might should have started sooner.

i hope this thread doesn't erupt into another food fight.  maybe the usual suspects can state their opinion ONCE and then give it a rest.

i think the guy is nutty to forgo treatment for diet.

I think just reading the above quote says it all. No further comment is needed by any rational person.

question: you have nothing to apologize about. you have a right to your opinion, we all post our opinions here freely. your opinion on the china syndrome diet is not a new one, it was a real fad thing when the book came out, and like many other fad diet and dietary trends, it came and went. it certainly still has its fans and believers, and that's ok too.

The raw food diet might actually work for some.  Don Imus (the shock jock) was diagnosed with PCa several years ago and declined conventional treatment.  He and his wife are die hard vegetarians, consulted with Dean Ornish and others and got started on habanero peppers and nothing but raw food.  The last I heard his PCa was still in remission.  To each his own.

i believe imus was diagnosed with PC last year and ate an organic, vegetarian diet for the ten years prior to being diagnosed.  don't get me wrong, i believe diet does make a difference but it's no alternative to conventional treatment.

GTOdave said... As reported in the NY Times today, the 61 year old is suffering from advanced PC and has refused hormone therapy, and has opted instead for a raw food diet to boost his immune system. It seems completely unreasonable to me to try to cure cancer without the best of conventional Western medicine; surgery, radiotherapy, hormone therapy, chemotherapy, (and soon molecular genetics) for the high risk cases, and using the best monitoring technology available for low risk cases (pursuing active surveillance). At the same time, it also seems completely unreasonable to me to rely only on these aggressive medical treatments and neglect the natural capacity of our bodies to protect against tumors, knowing what we all know about the role of diet, exercise and stress management in promoting or inhibiting the growth of cancer cells.  We can take advantage of this natural protection to either prevent the disease or enhance the benefits of treatments. Stack the odds in your favor... edit:   improved wording Post Edited (Casey59) : 12/3/2010 8:10:23 AM (GMT-7)
