I posted something awhile back and I wanted to get some information for my dad. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in October. He has a Gleason score of 9. He had 5 biopsy cores taken and 2 were positive. His PSA levels were taken recently and they were 6.0-7.2 (not sure exactly).
He is looking into having surgery soon. He has met with VA doctors in Milwaukee and in the Chicago area. I'm a bit worried because he hasn't had the surgery yet.
It looks like he will use radiation treatments and possibly hormone therapy post-surgery, (if any is necessary).

Does anyone have any comment on VA hospitals in the Milwaukee and/or Chicago area? My dad is curious and I want to make sure nothing holds him up any longer. The doctors have told him he needs surgery and I just want him to get the best care possible.

If anyone has any information that can help I would really appreciate it.

Thanks.

I can't comment on the VA, but with a Gleason 9 he does need to be treated. In many cases VA care is actually provided under the supervision of major hospitals. This is not a guarantee of quality, but it should give you hope that quality care is available to your dad.

How old is Dad? He may have other options..But yes, Surgery, radiation, hormone treatment is standard treatment for G-9 (high-risk) patients..Aggressive cancer gets aggressive treatment...Even if the surgery results in clean margins and his PSA drops to undetectable, they may STILL recommend follow-up radiation and hormones as it is felt this trifecta improves G-9 guys survival chances considerably..But that choice will be his...Undergoing these 3 treatments over a short time-span is a pretty rough road..He should not overlook Brachytherapy (seed implants) combined with IGRT beam radiation which has shown success equal to or better than surgery with less overall side-effects..

Edsdsd:

We're going through the same thing w/my Dad. He was diagnosed in Dec. with a Gleason 9. My only advice is to find a hospital that can perform the Da Vinci Robotic Procedure. With a Gleason 9 the cancer is obviously very aggressive and waiting a long time is not a smart choice.

My Dad's surgery was yesterday -- his biopsy was the first week of December. He was eligible for surgery Jan 24th but they couldn't get him in until yesterday. (If that helps with your time line from diagnosis to surgery date).

I don't know much about VA hospitals. We have one here but most people chose the other two local hospitals. I would find a doctor he's comfortable with and go to whatever hospital they work at.

As far as post surgery, he will be doing radiation (for sure) and hormone therapy if needed just as described in your Dad's case. His doctor said with the "aggressive cancer" he would prefer to treat it aggressively.

Dad's surgery lasted 6 hours -- so don't be surprised if it seems to take forever. I'll be checking on his this morning to see how his post op night 1 went.
