Early this morning an old work associate heard about my ordeal and dropped off a bag of Venison! All kinds, breakfast sausage, burger, steaks all yummy stuff! The dilemma here is obvious... to eat or not to eat confused
Opinions are appreciated.

I have a friend(Gary) you has been dx with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. He is on a diet of organic fruit and vege's, lean meat and few other special foods. Last fall he asked if he could buy my deer if I got one. . So when my brother and I both got our deer we brought them to the butcher, called Gary and told him where they were at and don't worry about the money. He is already asking if he can come hunting with us next fall.

Slink,
It would be a crime against nature to waste it. However, don't eat it all today - just a bit. Break it up into several portions and put them in the freezer for enjoyment at a later date - during celebrations. You can decide what is worth celebrating.

I've got room in my freezer if you want me to hold (and test) it for you. ;-)

These are the responses I was hoping for yeah I am a hunter but mostly small game-rabbit & squirrel. When I get Venison from family and friends it's a bonus! You have no idea how bad I wanted to keep it devil
I was at the local market the other day and they now sell Bison. Another low fat meat. That too could be in my future smilewinkgrin
The first GFMPH event I attend, these meats will be on the menu!

DASLINK -

- from an internet source - "Venison lean is higher in moisture, similar in protein and lower in calories, cholesterol and fat than most cuts of grain-fed beef, pork, or lamb."
- will be able to freeze well for up to 3 months, as you already know...

-you can wrap the loin in bacon to keep it moist while cooking - and serve it as medallions ( like bacon wrapped filet mignon)..everything in moderation...

hugs,

Purg;
As a kid, we ate mostly what we hunted or fished, except chicken and uncle raised those. I have eaten the outsides of most everything in my area but the insides of nothing in my area! Ya have to draw the line some where!
Bronson, the meat is already frozen in air tight bags so it will keep in the deep freeze for a very long time.I'll be able to munch for a while...YUM!
F8; right before all this sillyness started, we ordered a bunch of steaks from Omaha, and received some as gifts from friends. LOVE EM"!!! You cook them per their instructions and you can cut them with a fork! Enjoy!

We got a newsletter from HMSA, a Hawaii med insurance co. stating that Hamburger that is at least 93/7% ,no fat/fat is just as good for you as 100% turkey breast burger. So we switched to that, though no more than 1 or 2 times a month. I like turkey burger in chili though. Definitely like turkey bacon but probably as bad as regular, its the salt. Moderation as in moderators, lol.. I just had an epiphany, really. Our Moderators keep things in moderation. Like I always say Ain't words grand. Aloha!!

daslink,

see, i grew up in a family where no one hunted or fished. i have never hunted in my life, but use to go fly fishing a lot for trout, but only did catch and release. tried a little game meat before, but doesnt do it for me.

ed, send some of those omaha steaks this way, they are part of my taste-good prostate diet. grilled some nice ones out just yesterday.

The big deal today is the term organic. The venison is organic, and no antibiotics or growth hormones.

Enjoy.

DaSlink, The deer in our area is all corn fed anyway. I lived for 2 years on what I could hunt, so now that Im finacially stable, I don't hunt anymore. Just make sure to cook it to minimum 165 degrees to kill any possible parasites. End the day with a stool softener if that is your concern. Fat/cholestrol wise, venison is comparable to chicken. Eat Up!
As far as Omaha steaks is concerned, you are paying a super premium price for marketing. There are several beef producers in our area that sell grass fed angus and limosine beef for 2.99/lb ground, 3.99 lb chuck, 4.99 sirloin, and 7.99 porterhouse ( divide the porterhouse down the bone for a filet mignon and a new york strip.)
