Has anyone had any experience or recomendations with doctors or hospitals in the Jax, FL area?  Right now I am going to the McIver Clinic (Dr Crum)

Gleason 6,

Dr. Todd Igel @ the Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville performed my surgery
over a year ago.   I'm very satisfied with my results.

Sunbird,

I have a meeting with my urologist next week to discuss results of biopsy. I was going to go to Mayo for a second opinon. Did it take you long to get an appointment? I'm wondering if I should be setting up an appoint now.

Thanks again.

Gleason 6,

I don't believe it took me too long to get an appointment. I think if you google Mayo Urologists, you can read credentials of the urologists on their staff. I picked Dr. Igel because he is their Chair Urologist and he was trained at Mayo in MN. I had "open" surgery due to earlier colon cancer surgery, so he didn't want to risk the Davinci Robot. He didn't know what he would get into. Dr. Igel's secretary is Carol and you can reach her @ 904 253 7330. Mayo Hospital is new, and all their rooms are private. I spent two nights there. I too, went to the McIver clinic in 2006 with what I thought was BPH. If I had prostate cancer at that time, it wasn't diagnosed.

This is great. This thread is an example of how helpful this site and its participants can be. You cannot place a value on something like this.

G6, Dr. Igel at Mayo also did my RRP in Aug 09.  He is Urology Dept Head at Mayo Jax and has probably performed more than 1000 RRP. Other men at Mayo Jax say all (6) the Uros are very good.  Best of Luck.   The Old Sailor

I checked my insurance (BCBS (CDHP)) and I think the only docs at Mayo that they will cover are Steven Petrou and Paul Young. Not sure why, but I think I'd like to get my 2nd opinion from Dr. Igel

Gleason

My surgeon was not covered by my insurance. He is one of the busiest and best known in that area her ein NYC.

When we told his office manager that we were not covered ( i would have paid full regardless) she said he never turns anyone with cancer away and that they would work it out with the insurance and only charge me a fraction of the fee.

My point is that it's no harm for you to ask the guys of your preference even if they don't cover you. Chances are that given your age and numbers they will work with you. No harm in trying.
