I have to admit that before getting cancer, I didn't pay too much attention to cancer stories in the media and in movies. I didn't even follow Lance Armstrong too much. I had no idea De Niro, Giuliani, Zappa, Joe Torre all had what we have.
If I ran across a movie about cancer it wasn't a topic that really captured my attention.
Since getting cancer that has changed. I'm dying to see the Javier Bardem movie about a man with advanced prostate cancer in Barcelona, and last night my wife and I started watching season 1 of "The Big C" with Laura Linney. It's really quite good and she is very good in it. She has terminal cancer and so far ( we are up to ep 6 ) she has refused to tell her husband or 14 year old child. We are still trying to understand why she would keep it a secret and following the build up of her character in order to get it. Anyway, I would really recommend this. It's quite poignant at times but also quirky and offbeat. It's on Showtime.
I'll be looking for a lot more stuff like this from now on.
I know people want to watch movies to be distracted, but with cancer being so prevalent and affecting so many of us directly or indirectly you'd think there would be more out there. The roles certainly provide a nice challenge for good actors.
