I know there is another thread running for May PSA results but wanted to start a new thread with Brachytherapy in the title to help anyone searching Brachy threads in particular.

My husband had his first PSA test yesterday, 3 months post implant.

PSA before treatment – 11      Current PSA – 3.83

We are absolutely delighted.  Of course we know we aren’t out of the woods yet but very encouraging to see the PSA down to less than half the level it was.

As a little aside, we are not quite ready to crack open the champagne yet as we do have another little health issue that has reared its ugly head.  What is that saying ‘it never rains but it pours!’

My husband had a double hernia repair about 5 years ago and on Friday last (the 13th!!!) whilst at work, another hernia reared its ugly head.  He was in quite a bit of pain over the weekend and the ‘bulge’ still there Monday morning despite taking it easy all weekend.  He saw his Consultant yesterday evening and it looks like the hernia hasn’t ‘broken through’ so there is a chance it will settle down again on its own, even if only temporarily.  Going to monitor it over the next 7 days but if worsens then it will need repairing.  We spoke with the clinic where his Brachy implant was done to seek their advice which is basically that they would prefer he didn’t have any surgery within the first 6 months post implant but it would be dependent on whether the Consultant feels the risk is too high to leave the repair for another 3 months.

Yesterday I thought the top of my head was about to blow off with the stress of it all ........ boy was that PSA test result just what we needed.

Sending a hug from the UK

Dear Over:

Congratulations!  That is indeed an excellent result...anything less than half the original PSA a this time is great.  Here's to a whole string of falling PSA's!

Best,

Congratulations. Also, thanks for the information on the hernia. I have a small one (and a hemorrhoid - gosh it's amazing what I talk about now) and am wondering if I should get it repaired before or after treatment. I hope it settles down and you can get it taken care of in time. Any SE three months out from Brachy?

Hi Gleason 6
3 months out and the SE’s have been minimal. Procedure went very well with an overnight stay in hospital. Catheter was taken out before leaving hospital. He has been on Tamsulosin daily since the implant to reduce the swelling in the prostate and help with the urinary symptoms. He did have urinary urgency/frequency during first two weeks (probably up every two hours during the night with a slow/weak flow). Urinary symptoms then improved week on week. He did have a slight peak in symptoms around week 5, lessened off around weeks 6 and 7 so we thought that was it – then had another peak around week 8. Suppose it isn’t an exact science as to who will get what and when. His flow is improving daily and almost back to pre-implant and he is now getting up zero or once per night to pee. Fingers crossed he will soon be back to his pre-implant zero times getting up in the night, except after a heavy night on the beer of course!
ED hasn’t been a problem at all but his ejaculate varies from 50% less to almost zero at times (yes amazing what we talk about on here!). Our understanding is that the Tamsulosin does also reduce the ejaculate so possibly it will increase again once he is off the medication?
He does a very physical job (a plasterer) and has continued to work as normal since 2 weeks post implant.
Re your hernia, would probably be worth getting Dr’s opinion on whether you should get it repaired before any treatment you decide on.
Good luck today.

That's good news, hopefully the hernia will resolve itself without surgery and the psa will continue to tumble as the radiation works on the cancer.
