I see that kegels are being discussed in a separate thread.

I've always felt that I had been unintentionally doing kegels for a couple of years before diagnosis and surgery. I had such terrible urinary urgency that I spent a lot of time every day struggling to hold my urine until I could reach a restroom.  I was, essentially, doing kegels many times per day, every day.
Maybe that's why I didn't have much problem with incontinence after surgery. Now, 9 months after surgery, I don't even think about kegels anymore, although I did them after surgery until fully continent.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?  Is the urinary urgency that caused me panic at every highway rest stop...fear that the men's room would be occupied and that I wouldn't be able to hold it....common to most of us?  If so, don't you think we were kegeling without even being aware of it?

I had no continence problems at all before surgery - could hold for hours, so I really didn't have that "pre-training". But you are right, it is the same muscles, same effort (as described by by Phys. therapist).

Some of us who were in college in the late 60's early 70's also got introduced to Kegels by our girlfriends. You'll see that almost every site that talks about Kegels puts a sex spin on them. Pity I didn't keep doing those. I didn't get the extensive pre-surgery advice, and found HW months after surgery.

(Pity I didn't keep the girlfriend devil )

I would have to say my experience was similar to yours clocknut. i remember being in Vegas and having to go sooooo bad, but reminding myself that I could hold it. So those muscles really got used. And I absolutely do feel that helped me to regain continence after my surgery.

I recently told my uro that I am satisfied overall with the continence thing... 98% I think I said and that is because I might have a 6 pack of cold ones over the course of an evening once in awhile.

He reminded that I wasn't getting any younger, and that even if I never had cancer, i'd probably be at 98% under thos conditions.

I get his point.

Good thoughts to all of you from a Very nice and sunny day overlooking the Atlantic, here on Cape Cod.

I didn't have a urinary urgency problem but I've been a "frequent" kind of guy for ever. Luckily its by choice. At the office I can get up and go out to smoke when ever I want and I stop by the mens room on the way back... I'll hit the mens room on the way to lunch and on the way back.... My surgeon said this is no big deal and I can hold a lot without disconfort anytime I want...

Then there's happy hour. Some nights I can drink 3 or 4 beers without going... and other nights I go after every beer... Course once you start going its becomes a workout which makes you more thirsty..

Speaking of HH... I just finished the weekend yard work and will be heading out....

142 - if you see this - I'll be at Shucks at the corner of Greenville Ave and Lovers Lane yeah
