Sixty Minutes did a story about this a year ago or so.
On one hand they talked about really old people that were ready to meet their maker but were given so really stuipd expensive tests anyway. On the other hand there were people near death that still wanted to fight even though they didn't have a chance to survive...

As the saying goes " Life can be worse than death".
My step father was stuggling with bladder cancer in Florida
fall 2010.  Myself and 2 brothers and 2 sisters live many miles away.
When my brother visted our mother and step-father, he was shocked.
When my brother walked in the hospital room, he said he quickly walked
out and cried.  My brother is not emotional and strong as they come.  He
said he looked like a corpse, only mumbling could not talk.  When my
brother talked to the nurses, they said why is your mother keeping him
alive.  Her reponse was he wished to fight to the bitter end.  After my
brother convinced our mother to transfer him to hospice, he died while
they were transporting him there.
