It has been approximately two years since I was implanted with a Coloplast Quadratic Virtue sling without my consent. I had consented to a simple “U” shaped AdVance type sling, not a four-armed contraption including a center “platform” that was positioned in my scrotum.
I have read where this center “platform” is compared to a football goalpost. Just what I wanted implanted in my scrotum. In my opinion, this was a classic case of “bait and switch”.
I became suspicious of a “switch” when I realized the two lower “arms” and “platform” of the Virtue sling’s mesh could easily be felt under my skin. The two lower “arms” felt like pencil-sized rods that I initially suspected were clamped to my leg bones and extended to the “platform” in my scrotum. I later was told the lower “arms” were actually wrapped around my lower pelvic bones.
The “platform” in my scrotum (since removed) felt like a hard credit card with a big “V” notch on the rear side. The unrelenting pain from this tortuous device was intolerable. Strong long term narcotic medication did little to diminish the constant pain or enable meaningful sleep.
To add insult to injury, my pad usage increased from 1-2 pads per day to 4-6 pads per day immediately following the Virtue implant surgery.
After prolonged and frustrating searches, I was finally able to locate a doctor at the Cleveland Clinic that specializes in fixing medical surgeries that have had bad outcomes. I hoped and prayed that all of the Virtue sling's mesh could be removed from my body in hopes of ending or reducing my suffering but that was not possible. My surgeon was able to remove the mesh “platform” from my scrotum but the four “arms” remain.
My scrotum skin remains very painful to touch or contact with clothing. I am of the opinion that my scrotal nerves were permanently damaged by the Virtue sling implant.
Although my total pain was lessened somewhat by removing the Virtue mesh from my scrotum, the lower mesh “arms”, that remain in my body, are a source of continuous pain and suffering. When seated, it feels like I am sitting on two steel cables. When I move or exercise, they often cause stinging and/or burning sensations, much like a bee sting.
I can easily feel the blunt cut ends of the “arms” near the creases between my legs and scrotum. One side is actually causing an easily seen bulge in my skin.
To date, I have not found an orthopedic surgeon what will agree to remove the remaining mesh. I am told it is “too deep” in my body to be safely removed. Until the lower “arms” are removed, my suffering will continue. I am hoping the upper “arms” don’t cause problems in the future.
In spite of this fiasco, I am not anti-sling. The surgeon that removed the Virtue “platform” approximately one and one-half years ago implanted an AdVance sling, by American Medical Systems, following partial removal of the Virtue sling. I can not feel any part of the AdVance sling which was what I was promised when I consented to the original sling surgery. I did not want anything implanted in my body that I could feel.
The AdVance sling is working fantastic. I continue to be 100% dry after more than ten years of using pads.
I wish my story was an isolated incident but I know that is not true. Please understand I share my experience in hopes advancing positive outcomes of all sling surgeries.
I would be very interested in hearing from others that have suffered long-term intolerable pain following male sling surgery.
