So I have read repeatedly that soy is really good for men with prostate cancer. My mother in law has lived on Soy protein powder from Shaklee for years!! For over a year my husband had a daily protein shake made with soy powder from Shaklee or from the health food store. He drank soy milk and I tried to use tofu or edamame in recipes.
However, about 3 months ago my huband spoke with a family friend who had leukemia in the 70's. She did a form of the Gerson therapy for nine months (only vegetable juice, coffee enemas, pancreatic enzymes) and after six months she had no leukemia. She told my husband that it was very difficult and didn't know if it would work for prostate cancer. Anyways, she is now taking a course in nutrition and told him not to touch soy. She said it is all genetically modified and not good for you. Also, my husband talked with a "doctor" from Life Extensions and he too said to stay away from it because all the soy out there is genetically modified.
Also, I am wondering how the soy affects the estrogen hormones in a man. My husbands estradiol was elevated on a male hormone profile blood test he took. It could be related to the fact that he has prostate cancer. But high levels of estrogen in a man can lead to heart disease.
Any expert opinions on the subject of soy? I don't know if he should stay away from it or increase it in his diet.
