Week#3 Proton Therapy Report from IU @ Bloomington:

I have now completed week three and a total of 12 treatments of proton beam therapy. Things are proceeding as scheduled and so far no side effects or out of the ordinary occurrences. One thing that is interesting is how attached one can become to the team of radiation therapists that work with you each day, getting you ready for the beam. I actually get a little nervous when one of the "regulars" is not there. However, I have found that all of them are quite good at what they do, and I trust them all completely.

The other note of interest this week is that one of the youngsters staying at Jill's House completed his treatments this week (brain tumor) and got to "ring the bell" as he left the proton center for the last time. Quite a joyous time for him and his family. Talking to the proton center director of operations, I learned that the IU Proton Therapy Center treats a higher percentage of children than any other proton center in the country. I am grateful that there is a treatment option available for these kids.

Steve - very glad you are getting through this treatment without any side effects. It is not a procedure I am totally familiar with - and at times ignorance is bliss ( and avoiding information overload).
- also pleased you were able to experience others being helped by this technology - it does warm the heart.
-wishing you all the best -
hugs,

Steve,

Glad to hear your report, and that you got another week behind you. And yes, when you go for so many treatments, you get use to the routine, the help, the atmosphere, etc, know exactly what you mean.

There was no bell ringing for me when Salvage Radiation ended, all I got was a certificate, and a burned up bladder and bladder neck to show for it, lol.

And yes, glad these services are available for the wee ones, its bad enough for adults to deal with cancer, but even more horrific for children to deal with it.

Good luck as you continue
